I Won’t Run for Oyo Governorship in 2027 – FIRS Boss Adedeji

    Share

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zaccheus Adedeji, has officially put an end to speculations about his potential bid for the Oyo State governorship in 2027. The announcement came during a press briefing in Ibadan on Friday, where he categorically stated that his current responsibilities as the FIRS boss are his primary focus.

Adedeji, whose tenure at the FIRS has been marked by major tax reforms, revealed that while his supporters have been urging him to contest, he has chosen to dedicate himself to completing his national assignment successfully.

“I want to use this opportunity to respond to a lot of requests,” Adedeji told reporters. “I, Zacch Adedeji, will not contest for the governorship election in 2027. I know a lot of people would not be happy about this, but everybody knows the responsibility and grace that God has given to us.”

    Rising Calls for Leadership

Adedeji’s announcement comes amidst rising pressure from political supporters and stakeholders in Oyo State who believe his experience and leadership could steer the state toward further development. Having previously served as Oyo State Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Adedeji left an indelible mark by implementing reforms that boosted the state’s financial health.

“Fourteen years ago, I was Commissioner of Finance,” he reflected. “With the grace of God, we’ve done all of what God wants us to do in the state. He has given us that platform.”

    A Career of Public Service

At 45, Adedeji’s political journey has been remarkable. His career began in Oyo State, where his financial strategies contributed significantly to enhancing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). His success in state governance earned him national recognition, culminating in his appointment as the FIRS chairman in 2023.

Adedeji’s reforms at the FIRS have been pivotal in strengthening Nigeria’s tax system, driving efforts to expand the tax net, and curbing evasion. Under his leadership, the agency has reportedly achieved record-breaking revenue collections, further solidifying his reputation as a capable administrator.

    “No Room for Distractions”

Adedeji emphasized his commitment to his current role, asking for prayers and support from Nigerians. He noted that the responsibility of managing the nation’s tax agency is demanding and requires his full attention.

“The only thing I need from you is your prayers for strength to end well with what I’m doing now,” he appealed. “I would not want to be distracted.”

    Mixed Reactions from Supporters

Adedeji’s decision has elicited mixed reactions among his supporters. While some respect his dedication to his national assignment, others express disappointment, believing he would bring visionary leadership to Oyo State.

“He has the experience and the track record we need,” said a political analyst in Ibadan. “But I understand his decision. Leading an agency like the FIRS at this time is not an easy task.”

Others, however, view his decision as a strategic move. “Adedeji is playing the long game,” suggested another commentator. “He knows his value and might be considering a bigger national role after completing his term at the FIRS.”

    A Legacy in Progress

Despite stepping away from the governorship race, Adedeji’s contributions to Oyo State remain a significant part of his legacy. From his reforms as Commissioner of Finance to his ongoing work at the FIRS, his career reflects a dedication to public service that transcends personal ambition.

“I’m grateful for the trust people have in me,” he concluded. “But this is not the time for distractions. I remain committed to the task at hand.”
