The annual Lagos Thanksgiving Service took an inspiring turn on Sunday as former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode joined his successor, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a public display of unity and optimism for the state. Tagged the “Harvest of Thanksgiving,” the 2025 edition of the event held at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, drew political leaders, clergy, and residents to pray for a promising year.

Ambode arrived at the event accompanied by his wife, Bolanle, marking a significant appearance alongside the state’s current first family. Governor Sanwo-Olu, his wife Ibijoke, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, and Chief Judge Kazeem Alogba were among the dignitaries present at the service.

    Sanwo-Olu Promises Renewed Development

Addressing the congregation, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted his administration’s plans to accelerate development across key sectors, pledging an aggressive focus on transportation, agriculture, health, energy, and environmental improvement in 2025.

“We remain committed to delivering impactful projects that will elevate the standard of living for every Lagosian,” he assured the audience. “This administration will double down on our developmental efforts while aligning closely with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.”

Acknowledging the challenges of the current economic realities, Sanwo-Olu praised Lagosians for their resilience, which he described as crucial for Nigeria’s long-term growth. “We recognize the sacrifices you are making and are committed to ensuring that 2025 brings relief, stability, and opportunities,” he emphasized.

Sanwo-Olu provided a glimpse of President Bola Tinubu’s economic roadmap, noting significant strides planned for the new year. “We have Mr. President’s assurance that inflation will drop significantly and cost-of-living challenges will be addressed comprehensively,” he stated.

    Call for Collaborative Leadership

Highlighting the interplay between federal and state governance, Sanwo-Olu urged leaders at all levels to work collectively to deliver tangible benefits to citizens. “This work is not for the President or the Federal Government alone,” he stressed. “At the subnational level, we must intensify our responsibilities to ensure the dividends of democracy are felt by as many people as possible.”

He further explained Lagos State’s intention to serve as a benchmark for good governance, reiterating the administration’s commitment to collaboration with the federal government.

    Spiritual Strength and National Prayers

Clerics at the service led fervent prayers for Lagos State, President Tinubu, and the entire nation. They petitioned for prosperity, guidance, and stability, reflecting the themes of gratitude and hope that underscored the event. Prayers were also offered for Governor Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Hamzat, their families, and other leaders.

    Ambode’s Rare Public Appearance

Ambode’s attendance was particularly noteworthy, as it marked one of his rare appearances at high-profile state events since leaving office in 2019. The former governor’s presence alongside his wife, Bolanle, was perceived as a gesture of solidarity and reconciliation, especially as political watchers have often noted the differences between both leaders.

Their public camaraderie at the thanksgiving service projected a message of unity, potentially signaling a new chapter in Lagos’ political landscape.
