In a daring midnight operation on January 11, 2025, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) uncovered a massive drug trafficking syndicate in the Kagini area of Abuja, intercepting a 40-foot trailer laden with 2,217.6 kilograms of skunk. The illicit cargo, destined for Northern states, was found being offloaded into six vehicles at an abandoned fuel station. Among the vehicles seized were a Toyota Sienna bus, a JAC Hilux truck, and a Toyota Camry.
“A Major Blow to Drug Traffickers”
The NDLEA’s Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers involved, noting the operation was part of a broader campaign against drug abuse and trafficking. “This successful seizure highlights the dedication and expertise of our teams across the nation,” Marwa stated.
Arrested during the Abuja raid was 42-year-old Isaac Monday Desmond, believed to be a key player in the distribution network. Preliminary investigations revealed the consignment originated from Uzebba in Edo State, a region notorious for drug trafficking activities.
Cocaine Concealed in Face Cream: Lagos Uncovers Australia-Bound Shipment
Meanwhile, in Lagos, NDLEA operatives disrupted another syndicate attempting to smuggle 330 grams of cocaine cleverly concealed in face cream containers. The shipment, destined for Australia, was intercepted at a logistics firm by officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations (DOGI). “These traffickers will go to any length to disguise their illegal goods,” an NDLEA spokesperson said.
Rivers State: N1.1 Billion Codeine Seized
In Rivers State, a joint operation at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex led to the seizure of 338,200 bottles of codeine-based syrup, valued at over N1.1 billion. The containers had been flagged by NDLEA intelligence, leading to their thorough inspection on January 9 and 10.
“This level of sophistication requires us to remain vigilant. The war against drug abuse is far from over,” Marwa reiterated during his briefing.
Traditional Priest Arrested After Three-Month Manhunt
In a dramatic turn of events, NDLEA operatives apprehended Bariu Aliu, a traditional priest in Lagos, after an intense three-month manhunt. Aliu, allegedly the leader of a drug syndicate, was arrested in connection with a 2,760kg skunk haul seized in October 2024. Despite the earlier conviction of two accomplices, Aliu evaded capture until now.
The priest’s arrest underscores the agency’s relentless pursuit of justice, as Marwa affirmed, “We will not rest until every individual involved in drug trafficking faces the law.”
Kano Raid: Young Trafficker Nabbed with Opioids
In Kano, a raid on January 9 led to the arrest of 23-year-old Habibu Ya’u. Officers recovered 45 blocks of cannabis weighing 24.2 kilograms and 40,800 pills of opioids, including tramadol. The NDLEA described Ya’u’s arrest as a warning to young Nigerians enticed by the drug trade.
War Against Drug Abuse (WADA): Advocacy Efforts Continue
Alongside enforcement actions, NDLEA intensified its community outreach under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) program. Recent activities included lectures at schools in Lagos, advocacy sessions at mosques in Kebbi, and visits to community leaders in Kano. “We must tackle drug abuse from both supply and demand angles,” Marwa emphasized.
Growing Threats and Persistent Efforts
With drug trafficking syndicates adopting more complex methods, NDLEA’s commitment remains steadfast. The recent arrests and seizures demonstrate the agency’s ability to adapt and respond swiftly.
As Nigeria continues its fight against drug abuse, citizens are urged to remain vigilant and support the NDLEA’s efforts. “Together, we can protect our communities from the scourge of drugs,” Marwa concluded.
