Tensions Rise as PDP Appoints New Southeast Leader, Ousts Odefa

    Share

In a move signaling internal restructuring, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced a new Southeast National Vice Chairman, replacing Chief Ali Odefa. The decision, which has sparked discussions within political circles, reflects the party’s effort to strengthen its regional influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Monday during a crucial meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja. Dr. Ibe Obioha, a seasoned politician and former state chairman of the party in Abia State, was unveiled as Odefa’s replacement.

A Push for Unity or Division?

The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the appointment as part of a broader strategy to reposition the party. “This is a step towards fostering unity and enhancing our electoral prospects in the Southeast,” Ologunagba said during a press briefing.

However, sources within the party suggest that the move may deepen internal divisions. Odefa, who served as the Southeast Vice Chairman since 2020, was reportedly ousted due to alleged disagreements with the leadership over the party’s handling of the 2023 general elections.

A party insider hinted at the brewing discord: “The decision to replace Odefa wasn’t unanimous. Some members believe it was politically motivated rather than performance-based.”

    Southeast: A Battleground Region

The Southeast remains a critical region for the PDP, historically a stronghold for the party. However, recent political dynamics, including the growing influence of the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), have threatened its dominance.

During the 2023 elections, the PDP suffered significant losses in the Southeast, losing key governorship seats and federal legislative positions. Analysts have pointed to leadership instability as a factor behind the party’s declining fortunes.

Dr. Obioha, in his acceptance speech, pledged to rebuild the party’s grassroots support. “This is not just an appointment; it is a call to action. The PDP must reclaim its position as the voice of the Southeast,” he declared.

    Odefa’s Response

Chief Ali Odefa, who has been a vocal advocate for party reforms, has yet to issue an official statement on his removal. However, close allies describe him as “disappointed but undeterred.”

A supporter from Ebonyi State, Odefa’s home base, expressed outrage: “This is a betrayal of someone who has dedicated years to the party. The PDP risks alienating its loyal members if it continues down this path.”

    Looking Ahead

The PDP’s decision comes at a time when political parties are recalibrating their strategies for the 2027 elections. With the Southeast emerging as a battleground for voter loyalty, the party’s new leadership will face immense pressure to deliver results.
