In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigeria Police Force has obtained a court order for the detention of popular social media influencer and former special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri. The court order, which was issued on January 13, 2025, follows accusations of defamation against Omokri, related to controversial statements about Paul Enenche, a prominent pastor with Dunamis Church.
The Chief Magistrate Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, granted the order after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, filed an ex-parte Motion. The matter revolves around an alleged smear campaign that involved defamatory comments targeting Pastor Enenche and others associated with his church. Omokri, along with three other individuals, is accused of tarnishing the reputation of the Dunamis Church and its leadership.
The accused individuals—Omokri, former Dunamis Pastor Abraham Daniel, Enenche Idoga Alexander, and Oboyinlo Enenche Peter—are named in a petition lodged by Patrick O. Okolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Okolo represents the plaintiffs in this case, who have sought redress for the harm they claim to have suffered due to the defamatory allegations.
In the ruling, Chief Magistrate Emmanuel A. Iyanna confirmed the remand order, granting the Nigerian police the right to hold the accused in custody pending the completion of the investigation. “An order of this Honourable Court for remand warrant of the Respondents (1) Mr. Daniel Abraham, (2) Mr. Enenche Idoga Alexander, (3) Oboyinlo Enenche Peter, and (4) Mr. Reno Omokri in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service pending investigation,” Iyanna ruled.
The Magistrate has set January 30, 2025, as the date for the next hearing, where the suspects are expected to be presented before the court. The remand order signals an intensification of legal actions against Omokri and others accused in the case.
For now, the court has ordered that Omokri and his co-accused be detained in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service until investigations are completed. They are expected to face prosecution once the investigation is concluded and a competent court has the opportunity to hear their case.
The Remand Order arose from the IGP’s directive to the Police Force following a complaint from the accusers who claim their reputations have been damaged by accusations published on multiple social media platforms and by agents associated with Omokri. Among these agents are high-profile online personalities such as those behind the popular gossip platform “Gistlover Blog,” Aunty Adul, and Kelechi TV, as well as others said to have conspired in the defamatory activities.
“This matter is a case of online misinformation causing significant damage to our clients’ integrity,” stated Patrick Okolo, SAN. He expressed that the case underscores the harmful power of social media and the need for responsible engagement, especially regarding public figures. “They did not only attack the church leader’s image but sought to create a dangerous narrative through lies and fabricated stories,” Okolo said.
While Omokri’s actions have attracted attention on various social media forums, this latest legal twist comes as no surprise to many who have been following his high-profile and controversial digital persona. Omokri, known for his outspoken opinions, particularly on politics and social matters, has frequently clashed with individuals and institutions across Nigeria.
But his current legal troubles appear far more severe, as the accusations against him have escalated from mere online comments to actionable legal claims, resulting in his formal charges and the search for his whereabouts by the authorities. Omokri has long been a divisive figure online, with some praising his strong political stances, while others label his statements as provocative and misleading.
His defamation case, however, is gaining momentum, drawing criticism from multiple quarters as social media scrutiny continues to mount. Critics of Omokri are quick to note that his past actions, involving intense political commentary and conflicts with several public personalities, have now caught up with him in a way that could have serious legal consequences.
Those defending Omokri argue that this case represents a worrying trend in Nigerian jurisprudence, with social media influencers becoming targets of government entities, especially given the increasing regulatory attention on digital platforms in the country. Some assert that the Nigerian government is aiming to clamp down on online speech, in what they view as an attack on freedom of expression.
However, Pastor Enenche and his supporters believe the case is a necessary one. “We cannot allow our reputations to be slandered without repercussions,” said one member of the Dunamis Church leadership. “We stand firmly in the truth, and we have faith in the judicial system to help us seek justice for the harm caused.”
The unfolding case between Reno Omokri, the Nigerian police, and the Dunamis Church has the potential to reshape the conversation about social media’s role in Nigerian society. As the date for further hearings draws nearer, many are keenly watching how this case will progress and whether it will set a precedent for other defamation allegations tied to the burgeoning Nigerian social media space.
Reno Omokri is yet to comment publicly on the case, although sources close to him suggest that he intends to contest the allegations in court. “His legal team is preparing a robust defense to refute the charges,” said one of his spokespersons.
