Delta State was thrown into shock and mourning after a 70-year-old man and his 50-year-old daughter were gruesomely murdered in Amai community, Ukwuani Local Government Area. The victims, identified as Mr. Aghanti and his daughter, Mrs. Atagoshi, reportedly met their untimely end following a land ownership dispute.

The tragedy unfolded when the assailant lured the pair into a bush under the pretense of resolving the dispute. According to the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, the man and his daughter were attacked, killed, and beheaded.

“The suspect called the woman, claiming he wanted to discuss the land issue,” Edafe revealed. “He took them into the bush, killed them, and cut off their heads.”

The community’s horror deepened when local vigilantes apprehended a man identified as Emeke, who was found with two human heads in his possession. Furious residents reportedly mobbed and set him ablaze before law enforcement could intervene.

What seemed to be a negotiation ended in unimaginable violence. “On the same day, the vigilante caught one Emeke with two human heads. When the people checked, they discovered the heads belonged to the father and daughter,” Edafe explained.

The police spokesman also confirmed that the mutilated bodies of the victims were later discovered in the bush. “They originally found the bodies without the heads,” he said.

Residents of Amai community are reeling from the shock of the incident. Neighbors described the victims as peaceful individuals with no history of conflict. Mrs. Atagoshi was well-respected in the community, known for her dedication to education and her church.Vigilante Justice Sparks Debate

The vigilante group’s swift action in apprehending Emeke, the suspect found with the human heads, initially drew praise. However, their decision to execute mob justice by burning him alive has sparked a heated debate about the limits of vigilante actions in handling crime.

Others argue that vigilante groups play a critical role in communities where law enforcement is stretched thin. “In rural areas like Amai, people often feel they have no choice but to take matters into their own hands,” said sociologist Dr. Stella Oghene.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has intensified efforts to apprehend the mastermind behind the murders. Mr. Edafe confirmed that the primary suspect is still on the run.
