In a bold move aimed at transforming Nigeria’s educational system, the Presidency has announced plans to integrate the National Identification Number (NIN) with student ID cards. The proposal, spearheaded by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, seeks to leverage digital identification to streamline access to educational opportunities, bolster data-driven policy formulation, and safeguard student identities.
During a recent working visit to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Abuja, Asefon outlined the government’s intention to ensure every Nigerian student, across all educational levels, is registered and has access to a reliable, digital form of identification.
“Our focus is to make sure that every student, from primary schools to tertiary institutions, has a digital ID that links to their educational records. This will not only ensure accurate data management but also prevent identity fraud,” Asefon emphasized in a statement over the weekend.
The initiative aims to create a seamless connection between students and opportunities in various sectors, including internships, job placements, and skills development programs. By linking NIN to student ID cards, students would have enhanced access to these vital resources, positioning them for better futures in an increasingly competitive job market.
“We want to ensure that Nigerian students are not just enrolled in school, but are empowered through accurate data. This integration will not only ease access to government programs but also provide a robust foundation for policy decisions that are aligned with the true needs of our student population,” Asefon explained.
One of the central goals of this integration is the creation of a national database that accurately reflects the number and distribution of students throughout the country. By tying student IDs to their NIN, the government can ensure that data is collected in a way that enables targeted educational reforms and resource allocation.
Asefon noted that the integration of NIN with student IDs is also a major step toward tackling identity theft, which has become a growing concern in Nigeria. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms for academic and professional transactions, securing students’ identities has become a priority for the government.
“The issue of identity fraud has been a persistent problem in the education sector, and with this integration, we aim to provide a solution that ensures every student’s identity is safeguarded,” he stated.
The NIN-Student ID integration will also bolster the implementation of government-backed educational programs. By linking students’ unique identifiers to various developmental initiatives, the government can ensure that these opportunities reach the students who need them most.
For example, students applying for internships, skills acquisition programs, or job placements will be able to use their integrated NIN-Student IDs as a verified means of identification, simplifying application processes and reducing administrative delays.
Asefon emphasized that his office, in collaboration with NIMC, the Ministry of Youth Development, and the Ministry of Education, would work toward raising awareness among students about the benefits of obtaining their NINs. “We aim to ensure that all students, whether in secondary schools or universities, are registered and have their NINs linked to their IDs for ease of access to various services.”
The Director General of NIMC, who was present at the meeting, expressed full support for the integration initiative. She acknowledged that NIMC had already made significant strides in expanding the reach of the NIN program, especially within educational institutions.
“We are ready to partner with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement and other relevant ministries to make this project a success,” the NIMC Director General affirmed. “Our recent efforts have focused on raising awareness, especially on campuses, to ensure that every student has the opportunity to register for their NIN and use it to access services securely.”
She also highlighted that NIMC has been undergoing a transformation under her leadership, with improved processes for issuing NINs and increasing public awareness about the importance of digital identification in the modern world.
The proposed integration is expected to have long-term benefits for the education sector and beyond. By creating a centralized, verifiable digital identity for students, the government will be able to ensure that resources, such as scholarships, loans, and educational grants, are distributed based on accurate data, reducing the potential for misallocation or fraud.
Moreover, this initiative aligns with the broader vision of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has consistently focused on empowering Nigerian youth and improving the nation’s education system. As part of the administration’s efforts to promote skill acquisition and entrepreneurship, the NIN-Student ID integration is seen as a key step toward building a more transparent, efficient, and equitable education ecosystem.
Asefon’s office has also committed to conducting awareness campaigns on university campuses and in secondary schools to promote NIN registration and ensure that students are well-informed about the integration process. This initiative, according to Asefon, will help to bridge the digital divide by making sure that every Nigerian student has access to digital tools that are increasingly becoming essential for academic and professional success.
“We cannot afford to leave any student behind,” Asefon stressed. “With this integration, we are ensuring that all students, irrespective of their background, have access to opportunities that will enable them to thrive in a digital economy.”
The integration of NIN with student IDs marks a significant step toward achieving a more efficient, secure, and accessible educational system in Nigeria. By streamlining identification processes and ensuring that students have access to key opportunities, this initiative is poised to empower the next generation of Nigerian leaders and professionals.
