The Kano State Police Command has withdrawn its heightened security stance on a religious event following strong objections from the state government, sparking debates over security concerns versus political interference.

The controversy revolved around the annual National Tijjaniyya Maulud, a significant religious gathering that has been held in Kano for 39 years. This year’s event at the Sani Abacha Stadium drew particular attention after the police raised alarms about a potential terror attack targeting public gatherings in the state.

Police Raise Security Concerns

In a pre-event briefing, the police announced they had intelligence reports suggesting terrorists were plotting attacks on crowded locations. To mitigate the threat, officers were deployed to the stadium and its environs, creating a tense atmosphere.

Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, explained the decision in a statement:
“Security personnel are present to ensure the ‘Maulud’ is conducted peacefully and concluded safely. Therefore, please remain vigilant against troublemakers. May Allah (SWT) deal with anyone planning to cause harm.”

Kiyawa also warned attendees about potential criminal activities disguised as services near the venue, highlighting a plot by individuals to set up fake phone-charging stations with the intent to steal phones.

State Government’s Fiery Response

However, the Kano State Government accused the police of using the terror alert as a pretext to disrupt the event. Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, condemned the police’s actions as “unnecessary and unfair,” asserting that no credible threat warranted such measures.

“The police are turning into tools for some individuals or enemies of the state,” Waiya stated. “This is an event that has peacefully taken place for nearly four decades. The Federal Government must intervene to withdraw these security operatives immediately.”

The state government viewed the police presence as an act of sabotage, with Waiya emphasizing that the event had always been a peaceful gathering that fosters unity and religious harmony in the region.

Public Tensions and Social Media Outcry

The standoff between the police and the Kano State Government stirred reactions on social media. Many locals questioned the timing of the police intelligence report, with some suggesting ulterior motives. Others, however, supported the police’s caution, citing Nigeria’s history of terror attacks on public gatherings.

“While the Maulud is important, safety should come first,” one resident argued on Twitter. “We can’t ignore potential threats.”

On the other hand, supporters of the state government accused the police of overstepping their bounds and attempting to undermine an event that brings significant spiritual and economic benefits to Kano.

Amid the backlash, Kiyawa took to his verified Facebook page on Saturday morning to address the public, emphasizing the police’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful event.
“Greetings, everyone! Security personnel are here to maintain peace and protect everyone attending the Maulud. Please pray for the success of this gathering and stay vigilant,” his post read.

Kiyawa’s message also reiterated the warning about criminal activities, urging attendees to report any suspicious behavior around the venue.

Historical Context of the Tijjaniyya Maulud

The National Tijjaniyya Maulud is a revered event among Tijjaniyya adherents in Nigeria, attracting thousands of participants annually. The gathering is not just a religious celebration but also a cultural and economic occasion for the region.

For 39 years, the event has been hosted without significant security incidents. It has grown into one of the most anticipated religious events in northern Nigeria, bringing together people from various parts of the country and beyond.

Federal Government’s Role Questioned

The clash between the Kano State Government and the police has reignited debates about the balance of power between federal and state authorities in Nigeria. Policing in the country falls under federal jurisdiction, often leading to conflicts with state governments over operational decisions.

“The Federal Government must allow states to have more control over security matters,” said a political analyst in Kano. “This incident shows the tension that can arise when federal agencies operate independently of state authorities.”

Calm Restored, But Questions Linger

As the event proceeded under heavy police watch, calm was restored, and no incidents were reported at the venue. However, the underlying issues of trust and coordination between the police and the Kano State Government remain unresolved.

Observers have noted that such conflicts could undermine public confidence in both parties. “This kind of public spat doesn’t inspire trust in the authorities’ ability to collaborate on critical issues,” one analyst remarked.
