In a significant move aimed at improving passenger experience and ensuring accountability, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has disclosed that Air Peace and Aero Contractors provided compensation to passengers impacted by flight delays, cancellations, and downgrades throughout 2024.

According to a statement released by the NCAA, the two airlines took proactive steps to address passenger inconveniences, providing refunds, discounts, and alternative travel arrangements as compensation. This initiative was part of ongoing efforts by the NCAA to ensure airlines uphold their responsibility to passengers, especially during operational disruptions.

The NCAA’s report, signed by Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, revealed that Air Peace was particularly active in its compensation efforts, reimbursing a total of 1,901 passengers in November alone. This came in the wake of various disruptions, ranging from technical issues to operational challenges.

“The passenger experience is at the heart of our mandate at the NCAA. We are pleased to note that Air Peace, one of the major domestic carriers, responded swiftly to passenger complaints and took responsibility for operational disruptions by offering compensation,” Achimugu stated in the report.

The compensation provided by the airlines, particularly Air Peace, was triggered by a range of operational disruptions. Air Peace’s compensation package notably included a 65 percent discount for passengers whose flights were downgraded from business class to economy class. In a similar vein, passengers affected by unscheduled maintenance, technical issues, aircraft swaps, and baggage delays were also compensated. The airline’s efforts reflect a growing recognition of the need to reduce the burden on passengers, especially in the face of rising flight delays and cancellations.

For example, on November 16, 2024, Air Peace offered compensation to passengers on flight 7170, traveling from Lagos to Benin City, after operational disruptions caused delays. The airline provided a 25 percent discount to the affected 129 passengers. Similarly, on November 4, 2024, passengers on flight 7425 from Kano to Abuja were offered compensation after facing flight delays, with 117 passengers receiving reimbursement.

“We understand the inconvenience that flight disruptions can cause to our passengers. That’s why we are committed to making it right by offering compensation where necessary,” said a representative from Air Peace. “Our aim is to ensure passengers feel valued, even when unforeseen circumstances affect their travel plans.”

Aero Contractors: A Smaller But Significant Effort

On the other hand, Aero Contractors, which operates on a smaller scale compared to Air Peace, also took steps to ensure passenger satisfaction. Over the course of 2024, Aero Contractors compensated 20 passengers in various ways, including offering free economy class tickets and business class return tickets. The airline’s efforts, although on a smaller scale, are a testament to the company’s dedication to improving customer relations.

Aero Contractors’ compensation efforts were particularly appreciated by passengers who had experienced downgrades or cancellations. “Even though our operations are more limited compared to larger carriers, we strive to make sure every passenger’s concerns are addressed. Our compensation packages reflect our commitment to providing excellent customer service,” an Aero Contractors spokesperson remarked.

The Role of NCAA in Ensuring Passenger Rights

The NCAA has long been an advocate for consumer protection in the Nigerian aviation industry. Its intervention in the compensation process serves to reinforce its commitment to enforcing the rights of passengers. In recent years, the NCAA has ramped up efforts to monitor airline operations, ensuring that airlines adhere to the regulations outlined in Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Act.

The authority’s report highlighted several issues that airlines faced in 2024, including maintenance challenges, weather-related delays, and staff shortages. The NCAA noted that despite these hurdles, airlines like Air Peace and Aero Contractors took proactive measures to mitigate the impact on passengers by offering compensation.

“The role of the NCAA in regulating and protecting passengers cannot be overstated,” Achimugu noted. “We expect airlines to be more accountable and transparent when disruptions occur, and we will continue to ensure that consumer rights are upheld in the aviation industry.”

Impact on Passengers and Public Perception

For many Nigerian air travelers, the news of these compensation efforts has been welcomed. The Nigerian aviation sector has historically been marred by inconsistent service delivery, especially in the aftermath of flight delays and cancellations. The introduction of passenger compensation is seen as a positive development, helping to restore trust in Nigerian airlines.
