Afenifere Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Appoints Farotimi Secretary

In a bold and resolute move, the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has issued a strong demand for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), citing concerns over his prolonged detention and the controversial nature of his legal proceedings.

This call came after the group’s recent general meeting, which was held at the hometown of its leader, Ayo Adebanjo, in Isanya-Ogbo, under the leadership of the group’s deputy leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan. The communiqué issued after the meeting was clear in its stance, asserting that Kanu’s continued detention without trial was unjustifiable and detrimental to the cause of national reconciliation.

The statement, signed by both Olaitan and the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Justice Faloye, emphasized that Kanu, who has been embroiled in a protracted legal battle following his controversial abduction in 2021, should be released in the interest of justice and peace. The group referred to Kanu as a “political detainee,” highlighting the numerous legal hurdles and contradictory rulings that have plagued his case.

“There is no justifiable reason to continue keeping him in detention without trial,” the communiqué stated. “It is clear that Nnamdi Kanu is undeniably a political detainee, and the fairness of his trial has been compromised due to the conflicting legal proceedings.”

The release of Kanu has been a longstanding demand from various groups and individuals, particularly those advocating for Igbo rights and the recognition of the Biafra cause. However, Afenifere’s recent statement has lent even more weight to this call, further intensifying the pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to act.

The communiqué continued, stressing that Kanu’s detention had become a symbol of the broader issues of political repression and unfair legal practices in Nigeria. Afenifere, which has long been an advocate for justice and equity, underscored that the country’s legal system should guarantee a fair hearing for all individuals, including those with controversial political views.

The group’s demand for Kanu’s release comes at a time when the Nigerian government is grappling with growing calls for national reconciliation and unity. With ethnic and regional tensions running high, the Afenifere leadership believes that releasing Kanu could serve as a critical step toward healing wounds and building trust between various sections of the country.

In addition to calling for Kanu’s freedom, the group also seized the opportunity to address another critical issue affecting Nigeria: police reform. Afenifere reiterated its long-standing call for the creation of state police forces, arguing that Nigeria’s vast population and diverse geographic terrain made it impossible to effectively secure the country with a single, centralized police force.

“Given Nigeria’s size and complexity as a federation, it is clear that the current unitary police structure cannot provide the necessary security for all regions,” the communiqué argued. “The creation of state police would help address the growing challenges posed by insecurity, including the infiltration of bandits into states like Oyo, where the governor has had to lament his inability to protect citizens due to the limitations of federal police forces.”

This call for state police comes amid rising concerns over insecurity in various parts of Nigeria, with governors and local officials increasingly raising alarm over the inefficacy of the federal police in addressing regional security challenges. Afenifere’s position aligns with that of many state leaders who have been advocating for greater autonomy in handling security matters within their jurisdictions.

The announcement also included the appointment of a new National Organizing Secretary for Afenifere: Barrister Dele Farotimi, a prominent lawyer and outspoken advocate for social justice and reform. Farotimi’s appointment comes at a time when Afenifere is seeking to strengthen its position as a leading voice for Yoruba interests and national unity.

“Barrister Dele Farotimi’s appointment is a clear indication of Afenifere’s commitment to strengthening its leadership and ensuring that its objectives are effectively pursued,” the communiqué stated. Farotimi, known for his sharp legal acumen and activism, is expected to play a key role in furthering Afenifere’s political and social goals in the coming years.

Farotimi’s appointment comes with high expectations, particularly given his reputation as a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and his commitment to the cause of justice and accountability. His previous involvement in legal battles and his advocacy for the rule of law have made him a respected figure among many Nigerians, especially those who feel disenfranchised by the country’s political system.
