Enugu State has been rocked by the shocking news of a brutal domestic violence incident, as a man, identified as Mr. Sunday Echegi, allegedly severed his wife’s hand during a violent altercation in the Nsukka area. The Enugu State government has swiftly intervened, detaining the accused husband for prosecution and sending a stern message against gender-based violence (GBV).

The incident, which occurred on January 26, 2025, has caused outrage and sparked public debate on the safety of women in Nigeria. The State’s Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to the press on Tuesday, underscoring that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration remains committed to eradicating domestic violence.

“The Enugu State Government will not tolerate such violent behavior, especially when it involves the safety of women,” said Enih, addressing the severity of the crime. “This incident underscores the dangers that women face in homes that should otherwise be their place of safety.”

According to the details shared by Mrs. Enih, the disturbing episode unfolded when Mr. Echegi, hailing from Ibagwa Ani in the Nsukka Local Government Area, and his wife, Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, engaged in a heated argument. Echegi reportedly attacked his wife with a machete during the dispute, with his initial target being her head. However, in an act of self-defense, Mrs. Echegi attempted to shield herself with her left hand, which tragically resulted in the limb being hacked off.

“The victim tried to protect herself by raising her hand to ward off the machete, but the attacker struck her left hand, severing it completely. She also sustained injuries to her right hand,” Mrs. Enih recounted. “Immediate action was taken by our department once we received the news, and the suspect was apprehended without delay.”

Enugu State authorities have moved quickly to bring justice to the victim, with police confirming that Mr. Echegi is currently in custody. The victim, Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, has been rushed to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital in Parklane, where she is receiving medical care for her traumatic injuries.

“We are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of the victim, who has already undergone initial medical treatment,” Mrs. Enih added. “Our priority now is to ensure she gets the full care and attention necessary to recover from this horrific ordeal.”

Gov. Mbah’s Personal Commitment to Justice

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has expressed his outrage at the violent attack and reaffirmed the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards domestic abuse. “This is an abhorrent act of violence, and it will not go unpunished,” Mbah said. “The law will take its full course, and justice must be served to protect the rights and dignity of our citizens, especially women.”

In a highly unusual step, Governor Mbah’s wife, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has personally taken up the matter, ensuring that justice is pursued without compromise. Sources within the Enugu State Government revealed that Mrs. Mbah has vowed to ensure the victim’s case receives the necessary attention and that the law enforcement agencies handle the investigation thoroughly.

“This administration is unwavering in its commitment to eradicating violence against women,” Mrs. Mbah said. “We will continue to support victims and take swift action against perpetrators of domestic violence in our state.”

A Broader Push Against Gender-Based Violence

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the widespread issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, which has long been a significant concern for women’s rights advocates. Since taking office, Governor Mbah’s administration has implemented a series of measures aimed at curbing domestic violence and gender-based abuse. These measures include increased police awareness and response, as well as the provision of victim support services.

“This incident is just the latest in a troubling pattern of gender-based violence in our communities,” Mrs. Enih remarked. “The state government is dedicated to ensuring that every woman and child in Enugu is protected from harm.”

The administration’s approach to gender-based violence is not limited to mere rhetoric but is reflected in concrete actions, such as the arrest and ongoing investigations into similar cases across the state. Public awareness campaigns and community outreach initiatives are also part of the broader strategy to prevent further abuse.

“We have seen a pattern of increased cases of domestic violence and child abuse in recent years, and we are committed to addressing these issues head-on,” Mrs. Enih continued. “This tragic incident is a call for all of us to take domestic violence seriously and take steps to protect our vulnerable populations.”

A Call for a Safer Society

As the investigation into the Echegi case continues, the Enugu State Government has made it clear that the punishment for such a violent act will be severe. The accused husband is expected to be transferred to the Enugu State Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further questioning.

“This is a case we are taking very seriously,” said Enih. “It is part of our broader fight against GBV and child abuse, which has caused untold harm to our families and communities. Let this serve as a warning to anyone who believes that such behavior will be tolerated.”

The attack on Mrs. Chinonso Echegi has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with calls for justice from Nigerians both within and outside the state. Advocacy groups have also rallied behind the victim, pledging to support her recovery and ensure that her attacker faces the full weight of the law.

Enugu residents, meanwhile, have expressed mixed emotions, ranging from shock and disbelief to anger over the horrific act. The case has revived conversations about the need for stronger laws and policies to combat domestic violence and protect women from harm.

“This could have happened to any woman,” said one local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous. “It’s time we take a stand and show that no one is above the law, no matter their gender or status.”
