The once-respected traditional ruler of Orile Ifo in Ogun State, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has found himself at the centre of a public scandal after being arraigned in court on charges of assault, conspiracy, and conduct likely to breach public peace.

The case stems from a disturbing incident that was caught on video, showing Ogunjobi allegedly assaulting an elderly man, Mr. Areola Abraham, in what has since been condemned as an unprovoked attack. The video, which quickly went viral, depicts the monarch in a furious outburst, physically and verbally abusing Mr. Abraham, a respected chief in the community. As if the attack wasn’t enough, Ogunjobi, who is a retired police officer, also boasted about his influence over law enforcement, even threatening to imprison the elderly man.

The incident occurred in public, with the video capturing Mr. Abraham on his knees as he was berated by the monarch. Ogunjobi is heard accusing the chief of being involved in a conspiracy, before threatening to destroy him and his family. “You are finished, I will make sure you rot in jail!” Ogunjobi is heard shouting in the video, further fueling outrage among the people of Ogun State and beyond.

In the wake of the video, public outrage surged, leading the Ogun State Government to suspend the monarch. In a statement, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiu Hazmat, described Ogunjobi’s behavior as “uncivil” and incompatible with the dignity expected of a traditional ruler. He added that the suspension was aimed at preserving the sanctity of the revered traditional institution.

Hazmat explained that the decision to suspend Ogunjobi was taken after a thorough investigation, which involved interrogating both the monarch and the victim. “After the investigation conducted on the matter, Oba Ogunjobi has been suspended. He has been stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile of Orile-Ifo pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise in the matter,” Hazmat remarked.

The fallout from the video also prompted the Egba Traditional Council to weigh in on the matter. The Council, in conjunction with the Ogun State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed that Ogunjobi’s actions were not in line with the dignity and responsibilities expected from a monarch.

The charges against Ogunjobi were formally presented in Ifo Magistrate Court, where he faces three serious counts. These include conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to disturb public peace. Despite the severity of the charges, Ogunjobi was granted bail, and the court adjourned the case until March 6 for further hearings. His arraignment marks a significant turning point in the case, as the people of Ogun State eagerly await the next steps in the legal proceedings.

In the viral video, Ogunjobi is seen aggressively confronting Mr. Abraham, accusing him of treason and conspiracy. The elderly chief, visibly shaken, is heard pleading for mercy, but the monarch is relentless, continuing to curse him and demand that he suffer the consequences of his alleged actions.

While many have voiced their disgust over the video and Ogunjobi’s behavior, others are questioning the power dynamics at play. Critics argue that the former police officer’s position as a traditional ruler and his claims of police influence may have contributed to the volatile nature of the incident. It is not uncommon in Nigeria for traditional rulers to wield significant influence, both within their communities and in interactions with the government. However, with this incident, Ogunjobi appears to have crossed a line, leading to his suspension and legal proceedings.

Ogunjobi’s past as a police officer has also sparked discussions on the potential implications of his actions. According to sources close to the matter, the suspended monarch had previously held influential positions within the Nigerian Police Force. His career in law enforcement reportedly granted him considerable power in the region, leading some to believe that he might have exploited this power to intimidate and harass his victims.

As the case proceeds, the key question remains whether Ogunjobi will be held accountable for his actions. The allegations against him have put a spotlight on the relationship between traditional rulers and law enforcement in Nigeria, raising concerns about the misuse of power and the potential for such behavior to undermine the dignity of the monarchy.

Ogunjobi’s suspension, meanwhile, remains in effect. According to Ganiu Hazmat, the decision was made to preserve the respect and dignity of the traditional institutions that are so deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Nigeria. In this case, the state government acted swiftly, acknowledging that no individual, no matter their status, is above the law.
