The Zone 2 Police Command has been rocked by a deepening scandal involving one of its own officers, an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) who is now under detention for allegedly tampering with crucial evidence in a high-profile sexual assault case.
According to sources within the police force, the IPO, stationed at the Isheri-Oshun Division, is suspected of deliberately altering a case file and doctor’s medical report related to the alleged sexual assault of teenage students by a prominent hotel owner in the area. This discovery has raised serious concerns about corruption within the police force, as well as the integrity of investigations into sensitive cases.
A Crime Covered Up
The controversy first came to light after a teenage boy, one of the victims, bravely disclosed the horrific events to his parents. The boy, aged 16, confessed to being sexually assaulted by a hotelier in Isheri-Oshun, Lagos, under threats that he would be killed if he revealed the incident. Disturbingly, it was reported that after his confession, the boy’s mental state began to deteriorate, eventually spiraling into madness—a sign of the profound trauma inflicted upon him.
This alarming development prompted an investigation by the Zone 2 police, who quickly detained the hotelier on charges of anal sexual assault. However, just when it seemed that justice might be served, allegations surfaced about foul play within the investigation itself.
The Alleged Cover-Up
In a shocking revelation, the police discovered that the initial case file was not only mishandled but deliberately doctored. According to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, who oversees the Zone 2 police, the IPO was found to have removed critical statements from the file. These statements were made by another teenager, who had also been a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of the hotelier.
Fayoade confirmed that the doctor’s report, which was supposed to corroborate the victims’ testimonies, was also tampered with. The Mirabel Center, a medical facility known for handling sexual assault cases, had reportedly provided documentation that was altered to fit a narrative that was inconsistent with the victims’ accounts.
A source within the police force, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared disturbing details of the investigation’s unfolding. “When the case file was recovered from one of the police units in Zone 2, it became clear that vital evidence had been concealed,” the source revealed. “The confessions from both victims and the medical reports had been manipulated to downplay the severity of the crime.”
The Investigation Unravels
Upon further investigation, officers from the Zonal Oracle unit, led by CSP Uba, arrived at the Isheri-Oshun Police Station to question the IPO. When confronted, the officer admitted to altering the file. The IPO allegedly removed key statements, including a detailed confession from a second victim. After being interrogated, the IPO was coerced into retrieving the concealed statements, which contained specific and graphic details about the abuse, further implicating the hotelier.
In response to the mounting evidence of corruption, AIG Fayoade has ordered an expansion of the investigation. “We cannot allow such acts of dishonesty to go unchecked,” Fayoade asserted. “More officers may be questioned, including those from Ejigbo Division, who may have played a role in hindering the investigation.”
The potential involvement of additional officers has raised concerns about a possible network of corruption that may have been protecting the hotelier or obstructing justice for the victims.
Public Outcry and Calls for Accountability
The scandal has sparked outrage among human rights organizations and the general public. Activists have condemned the police for its alleged complicity in enabling the abuse, especially as the victims’ voices were ignored or silenced.
“The manipulation of evidence in a case as serious as this is an insult to the victims and their families,” said a spokesperson for a prominent women’s rights group. “This officer’s actions represent everything that is wrong with our justice system, and it’s imperative that the authorities ensure accountability.”
The news has also caused alarm among residents of Isheri-Oshun, many of whom have expressed disbelief over the extent of the cover-up. One local, who wished to remain anonymous, commented: “This is heartbreaking. To think that someone in a position of power could betray the trust of the public in such a way is terrifying.”
The Road to Justice
As the investigation continues, there is a growing sense of urgency to bring the hotelier to justice. While the hotelier remains in police custody, there are concerns that the case might be further delayed or obstructed if the corrupt officers involved are not held accountable.
In the wake of this scandal, the Nigerian Police Force has faced increased scrutiny from both the public and advocacy groups. Many are now calling for stricter measures to ensure transparency in police investigations and to weed out corrupt officers who exploit their positions for personal gain.
“The public must be assured that these heinous crimes will be investigated without bias or interference,” said a legal expert in Lagos. “If this case is mishandled further, it will send a dangerous message about the lack of accountability in our justice system.”
The revelations have prompted calls for a full review of police procedures surrounding sexual assault investigations, particularly the handling of evidence and medical reports. The public is demanding more stringent measures to prevent such abuses from being swept under the rug in the future.
