Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has opened up on the challenges and triumphs of his administration in an exclusive interview with Channels Television’s Political Paradigm. In a candid conversation, the governor shared his journey of overcoming political odds, rebuilding the state’s economy, and defying powerful figures who once controlled the region’s wealth.
Adeleke, who was elected in 2022 after a hard-fought battle, has faced a significant amount of skepticism from both political opponents and the public. Despite his previous tenure as a senator where he was labeled as the “dancing senator,” many did not expect him to make a mark in the demanding role of a state governor. However, two years into office, the governor has proved his critics wrong, ushering in substantial infrastructural changes, tackling the state’s massive debt, and importantly, cutting off the influence of political godfathers from Osun’s financial system.
Victory Over Godfatherism
Reflecting on his victory, Adeleke revealed how his return to power was a clear message from the divine. “It wasn’t easy to defeat an incumbent, especially in Africa. But God said my time had come,” he explained.
The governor shared that, contrary to expectations, he entered office with a well-thought-out plan, one that was designed to address Osun’s deep-rooted issues, particularly those involving financial mismanagement. Upon taking office, Adeleke discovered that Osun was burdened with nearly N60 billion in debt, a staggering amount that had accumulated under the previous administration.
Instead of focusing on punitive actions against those responsible, Adeleke chose to focus on governance and development. “I showed the people what I met on the ground and called the obas to see the situation. There was no time to probe. I just moved straight to work,” he said.
One of the critical steps he took was curbing the influence of political godfathers who had a long history of manipulating the state’s finances. “I blocked all the leakages. No godfather will ever take advantage of Osun again,” Adeleke declared, emphasizing his commitment to a transparent and accountable system.
Reviving Infrastructure Amid Financial Challenges
Despite the state’s financial struggles, Adeleke’s administration has made notable strides in infrastructure development. His priority, he noted, has always been improving road networks, especially in rural areas, where the majority of Osun’s population resides.
“I focused on what really matters: roads and bridges. These are the foundations for economic growth. If farmers can’t move their goods, the economy will remain stagnant,” he said.
In the last two years, Adeleke has overseen the construction of over 150 kilometers of roads across the state, including key rural areas. The governor’s efforts have not been confined to just road construction; he has also ensured the installation of street lights, improving safety and enhancing the visual appeal of towns like Osogbo and Ilesha.
“I’m proud of what we’ve done in Ilesha. They’ve never had it so good,” Adeleke remarked, a sentiment shared by many residents who have seen a drastic improvement in their daily lives.
Adeleke’s infrastructure achievements have been funded primarily through the state’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) system, which he restructured to close off avenues for financial leaks. He revealed that under his leadership, Osun’s IGR has been significantly bolstered, allowing the state to tackle its debts while investing in development.
Mining, a New Revenue Stream
In an exciting development, Adeleke also revealed that his administration had revived the state’s mining industry, another key area where Osun is generating new revenue. After years of neglect, Adeleke’s government has secured a shareholder license for mining operations, a move that is expected to provide substantial financial returns.
“The mining sector was abandoned, but I’ve revived it. Now, we’re making money from it. I’ve already contacted the Minister of Solid Minerals to collect the necessary licenses for this operation,” he stated, underscoring the importance of diversification in Osun’s economic strategy.
Despite his successes, the governor has maintained a prudent approach to state finances, especially when it comes to the controversial issue of security votes. Adeleke has categorically stated that he does not take security votes, instead leaving them untouched to address any security challenges as they arise.
Looking Forward: A Vision for Osun’s Future
Adeleke’s vision for Osun is one rooted in sustainability and accountability. He sees his administration as a model for how states can operate without depending on political handouts or corruption. “It’s not just about roads and bridges. It’s about changing the system and ensuring that Osun’s resources are used for the people,” he said.
The governor also emphasized the importance of good governance in achieving lasting progress. “I don’t owe anyone any favors. I financed my campaign on my own. I’m not beholden to anyone, and that’s why I can make bold decisions,” Adeleke explained, reinforcing his commitment to independent and transparent governance.
As he looks to the future, Adeleke’s focus remains on the people of Osun. His administration’s strides in infrastructure development, financial prudence, and commitment to curbing corruption have set a strong foundation for the state’s long-term prosperity.
For the people of Osun, the past two years under Adeleke have been a period of transformation. From overcoming political godfathers to revitalizing neglected sectors like mining and infrastructure, the state is beginning to see the fruits of an administration that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens above political patronage.
