JAMB Bans Night UTME Registration, Warns 10 Centres

    Share

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a stern warning to registration centres conducting nighttime registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), citing safety concerns for candidates.

In a statement released on Sunday, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, condemned the unauthorized practice and urged centres to desist immediately. He emphasized that the well-being of candidates must not be compromised in the rush to complete registrations.

“While JAMB appreciates the enthusiasm of these centres to accommodate as many candidates as possible, this should never come at the cost of the candidates’ personal safety and security,” Benjamin stated.

The Board’s warning comes after reports surfaced about some centres engaging in nocturnal registration sessions, exposing candidates—many of whom are young students—to potential risks such as robbery, harassment, and accidents.

According to JAMB, this public exposure serves as the final warning to the centres, with the board making it clear that there will be no further notices before punitive measures are taken.

“This publication serves as a final warning, as no further notices will be issued before appropriate action is taken against violators,” the statement read.

Why JAMB is Cracking Down on Night Registration

The issue of nighttime UTME registration is not new, but JAMB’s latest response underscores growing concerns over security and the integrity of the registration process. The board has repeatedly insisted on strict compliance with registration guidelines to ensure fairness and transparency.

Over the years, reports have emerged of registration centres engaging in exploitative practices, including charging candidates extra fees, operating outside designated hours, and failing to provide a safe environment for young registrants.

Education analysts argue that the proliferation of unauthorized nighttime registration sessions could also create opportunities for fraud, with unscrupulous operators potentially manipulating candidate details, issuing fake registration slips, or engaging in cyber fraud.

JAMB has made it clear that any centre found violating the rules will face severe sanctions, including suspension or outright delisting from the registration process.

Candidates Urged to Use Approved Centres

As the UTME registration process continues, JAMB has urged prospective candidates and their parents to ensure they register only at approved centres and during official working hours.

Candidates have been advised to report any centre engaging in unauthorized practices, including night registration, to JAMB through its official complaint channels.

“JAMB will not tolerate any violations of the regulations governing the registration process and will take appropriate measures against any centre engaged in questionable or exploitative practices,” the board’s statement reiterated.

The 2025 UTME is expected to witness a large number of applicants, as thousands of Nigerian students seek admission into tertiary institutions across the country. With the registration process ongoing, JAMB remains committed to monitoring activities closely to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.
