The city of Owerri, the capital of Imo State, was plunged into confusion and uncertainty on the night of Saturday, following the shocking abduction of the newly-elected president of the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, shortly after he was declared victorious in the council’s national convention.
Eyewitnesses and those close to the youth leader have provided chilling details of the abduction, shedding light on how armed men in vehicles stormed a popular bar in the city, where Igboayaka and other OYC members had gathered to celebrate his win. The abduction has sparked widespread concerns across the region, leading to calls for swift action and investigation.
As the kidnappers seized the 38-year-old leader, they claimed to be law enforcement officers, further adding to the confusion of the situation. The abductors did not provide any official identification, leading many witnesses to suspect that their true identities were far from legitimate.
A Brief Respite and the Disappearance of Evidence
In a bizarre turn of events, the kidnappers returned shortly after their initial raid, this time focusing on Igboayaka’s personal property. The armed men seized his car, a luxury vehicle, and his mobile phones, which were quickly deactivated following the abduction.
“It was chaotic,” Ani said. “His phones went silent just five minutes after the abduction, and when we tried to ask the kidnappers for clarification or help, they simply told us to visit the Imo State CID for more details. But when we went to the CID, the police there claimed they had no knowledge of the abduction.”
Confusion mounted as Igboayaka’s associates sought to trace his whereabouts. Their journey took them from the local police station in Imo to other official channels, all of which denied any involvement in the incident.
A Connection to Ebonyi State?
The investigation took a surprising twist when intelligence reports surfaced, suggesting that the abductors may have had assistance from law enforcement personnel based in Ebonyi State. According to Ani, the OYC’s intelligence unit discovered that a woman who had attended the national convention was allegedly sent by the Ebonyi State Police to monitor Igboayaka’s movements before the abduction.
“According to what we learned, the Ebonyi State Police were tracking his movements closely,” Ani said. “And soon after the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed that they had Igboayaka in custody. However, the charges against him remain unclear.”
Sources close to the investigation have hinted that Igboayaka’s recent political activities might have triggered the abduction. In particular, there is growing speculation that his public statements about the looming threat of herdsmen attacks in Ebonyi State could have played a role. Just days before the abduction, Igboayaka had made headlines when he revealed that the OYC had alerted Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, about a possible attack on Amegu village in Nkalaha, Ishielu Local Government Area. That warning was made three days before the deadly attacks occurred.
Speculation of Political Retaliation
Several sources, including Comrade Ani, have suggested that the abduction may be politically motivated, pointing to the involvement of the Ebonyi State Governor in Igboayaka’s election.
“There are strong indications that Governor Nwifuru may have backed a candidate against Igboayaka during the OYC elections,” Ani explained. “With Igboayaka’s re-election, it’s possible that this abduction is a form of retaliation. Some are even speculating that the governor might have orchestrated the whole thing.”
Igboayaka’s abduction has raised questions about the safety of activists and political leaders in the region, with many wondering if the tension between different political factions is contributing to an environment of fear and intimidation.
Calls for Justice and Action from Authorities
The incident has garnered widespread attention, both within Nigeria and abroad. The leadership of the OYC, along with other regional groups, has called for an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction. They are also urging the Nigerian government to intervene and ensure that Igboayaka is safely released.
“The abduction of Comrade Igboayaka has sent shockwaves throughout the entire Igbo community,” stated the OYC’s General Secretary, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This is a clear violation of human rights, and we demand justice. We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police, and other relevant authorities to take swift action in resolving this crisis and securing the safe return of Igboayaka.”
The situation has also attracted the attention of human rights organizations, who have condemned the abduction and the climate of insecurity that activists in Nigeria have been forced to navigate.
A Call for Calm and Resolution
In the wake of the abduction, many have taken to social media, with several prominent voices calling for calm while demanding that the authorities prioritize the safe return of Igboayaka. As one Twitter user put it: “This is a time for solidarity. We must all demand answers and justice for Igboayaka.”
International organizations monitoring the political climate in Nigeria are also watching the situation closely, with many urging the Nigerian government to act swiftly to resolve the crisis.
