In an unprecedented move to tackle illegal immigration, the UK government has arrested 609 individuals for working unlawfully across the country, marking a dramatic rise in enforcement actions. The operation, which involved 823 raids on businesses suspected of employing undocumented workers, forms part of a broader crackdown on illegal working and immigration abuses.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper made the announcement on February 10, 2025, revealing the startling figures during the second reading of the Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill in Parliament. The figures highlight a sharp increase in enforcement efforts, with arrests up by 73% compared to January of the previous year. These actions form a key element of the government’s aggressive stance on border control and illegal migration.
“This surge in raids and arrests is a clear signal that the UK is taking action against those who disregard immigration laws,” Cooper stated. “For far too long, businesses have exploited illegal workers, and those working without authorization have been living under miserable conditions. Our message is clear: we will not tolerate it.”
The operation is a significant part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle illegal immigration, restore order to the immigration system, and dismantle organized smuggling operations. The authorities are not only targeting individuals but also going after the employers who facilitate illegal labor. Businesses found guilty of hiring undocumented workers face hefty fines of up to £60,000 per worker, according to the latest figures.
Raids Across Key Sectors
The raids, which occurred in various parts of the UK, focused on industries known for employing undocumented workers. Nail salons, car washes, convenience stores, and restaurants emerged as some of the prime targets in this nationwide crackdown.
In Cheshire, immigration teams stormed several vape shops, arresting ten individuals. Two others were taken into custody for possessing counterfeit documents. Meanwhile, in Humberside, a raid on an Indian restaurant led to the arrest of seven workers, with four others detained for further questioning. In South London, a grocery warehouse became the site of another operation, resulting in six arrests and four detentions.
One of the most concerning aspects of this crackdown, according to experts, is the prevalence of exploitation within these industries. The Home Office has highlighted how many migrants are brought into the UK under false pretenses, only to find themselves in deplorable working conditions. They are often subjected to long hours, low wages, and living in overcrowded accommodations.
Combating Exploitation and Smuggling Networks
The crackdown also targets the criminal organizations behind human trafficking and migrant exploitation. Rogue employers, often working in tandem with smuggling networks, have been exploiting vulnerable individuals, many of whom have been promised better opportunities in the UK.
