The late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, was a man who never wavered in his convictions. His children have described him as a figure of unwavering integrity who never sought public approval but remained true to his beliefs until his last breath.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo passed away in Lagos on Friday at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of courage, integrity, and commitment to justice and equity in Nigeria.
His eldest son, Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, spoke passionately about his father’s unyielding principles. “Our father was a man of principle. He stood by his word and lived according to his convictions. He never followed the crowd and was never swayed by public opinion,” Obafemi said.
According to Obafemi, Chief Adebanjo made significant personal and family sacrifices to stay true to his beliefs. “He paid a high price for his convictions, making personal and family sacrifices,” he noted.
Obafemi added, “History will judge him kindly for standing firm on his principles, even when they differed from the majority view.”
A Legacy of Integrity and Justice
Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s second son, Mr. Segun Ayo-Adebanjo, described his father as a man deeply proud of his Yoruba heritage while advocating for Nigeria’s unity. Segun emphasized that Adebanjo’s dedication to justice, fairness, and equity was unwavering.
“Many described him as detribalised. Everyone knows he passionately defended the Yoruba cause, but that never contradicted his commitment to a united Nigeria based on justice and fairness,” Segun explained.
He also highlighted his father’s admiration and commitment to the principles of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Premier of the old Western Region. “He lived a worthy life and upheld the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo,” Segun added.
Adebanjo’s loyalty to Awolowo’s vision shaped his political journey and ideology. He consistently advocated for true federalism and restructuring in Nigeria, emphasizing that a fair and just system was essential for the country’s unity.
An Advocate for Justice and Fairness
Throughout his life, Adebanjo was known for his fearless stance on national issues. He never shied away from speaking truth to power, even when his views were unpopular.
As a vocal advocate for restructuring, Adebanjo championed a fairer political system that would allow each region in Nigeria to govern itself with greater autonomy. He argued that this was the only way to ensure equity, justice, and lasting peace in the nation.
His position on restructuring was often controversial, leading to disagreements with political leaders. Yet, he remained undeterred, insisting that his advocacy was not for personal gain but for the future of Nigeria.
“He was resolute in his beliefs and never compromised his principles for convenience,” Obafemi affirmed.
A Detribalised Leader Committed to Nigerian Unity
Despite his strong Yoruba identity, Adebanjo was widely respected as a nationalist who believed in the unity of Nigeria. He consistently advocated for a country built on justice, fairness, and equity for all ethnic groups.
He opposed any form of discrimination and was vocal about the need for inclusivity in Nigeria’s political landscape. His vision for a united Nigeria resonated with many, even those who disagreed with his political stance.
Segun noted, “He was proud of his Yoruba heritage but also believed in a united Nigeria. He fought for justice, fairness, and equity until his last breath.”
A Life of Sacrifice and Conviction
Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s life was marked by sacrifices, courage, and an unwavering commitment to his principles. He was a key figure in the fight against military dictatorship in Nigeria and played an active role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which opposed the military regime of General Sani Abacha.
His activism during Nigeria’s dark days of military rule was risky and came at a great personal cost. Yet, he never compromised his stance on democracy and justice.
Adebanjo’s involvement in Nigerian politics spanned several decades, beginning with his association with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He was a staunch supporter of Awolowo’s vision of progressive governance and remained loyal to his ideals throughout his life.
Tributes and Final Farewell
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across Nigeria. Political leaders, cultural figures, and ordinary Nigerians celebrated his life and legacy. Many described him as a principled statesman who never wavered in his fight for justice and equity.
By 8:00 p.m. on Friday, friends and family members continued to visit Adebanjo’s Lekki residence to pay their respects.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s death marks the end of an era for Afenifere and Nigeria’s political landscape. His steadfastness and courage in the face of challenges will be remembered for generations to come.
A Legacy That Will Endure
Chief Ayo Adebanjo was more than a political leader; he was a symbol of integrity, justice, and courage. His children’s reflections on his life reveal a man who prioritized his principles over public approval.
“He will be missed for his unwavering stand because he was a man of great integrity,” Obafemi said.
Adebanjo’s legacy as a champion of justice, fairness, and unity will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians. His life serves as a reminder that true leadership requires courage, sacrifice, and an unshakeable commitment to one’s beliefs.
