Two Dead, Over 40 Injured in Deadly Blast at Zamfara Weekly Market

Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon as an explosion claimed two lives and left more than 40 others injured in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State. The deadly blast occurred in the midst of the bustling weekly market in the town, sending shockwaves through the community. The market, which is known for its vibrant trading activities, was in full swing when the explosion ripped through the air, causing panic and chaos among traders and shoppers alike.

According to Yahaya Yari, the Chairman of Talata Mafara Local Government, the explosion was caused by locally made gunpowder. “We have confirmed that the blast was caused by locally produced gunpowder, and it occurred at a section of the market where firearms and ammunition are sold,” Yari told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an exclusive interview. He expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that it occurred during peak trading hours.

“It was a moment of horror. The explosion happened just as people were going about their normal business. There was pandemonium everywhere. Traders and customers were scattered in all directions,” Yari recalled, his voice filled with sorrow.

The explosion has raised serious concerns about the safety of the public in the region, as the incident is believed to be linked to the sale of dangerous weapons and explosive materials in unregulated markets. Local sources have suggested that the gunpowder might have been improperly stored or handled, leading to the tragic event.

The blast’s impact was felt not just in Talata Mafara, but across the state. Yari confirmed that 44 individuals, many of whom were traders, were immediately injured in the explosion. “As soon as we were alerted, emergency services sprang into action. We were able to control the situation and swiftly transported the victims to the Talata Mafara General Hospital for initial treatment,” he said.

However, due to the severity of their injuries, the victims were later transferred to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto for further medical care. Unfortunately, two of the victims died from their wounds while the remaining 42 are said to be receiving treatment and are reportedly responding well to care.

“We did everything we could to manage the situation. Unfortunately, two people did not survive the injuries sustained from the explosion, but we remain hopeful that the others will recover,” Yari added, expressing his sympathy for the families of the deceased.

    A Market Stunned into Silence

The blast left the market – which is a major trading hub for people from surrounding villages – in a state of shock. Witnesses described scenes of utter devastation, with some saying that the explosion was so powerful it could be heard miles away.

“It was like a bomb going off. The whole place shook. I saw people running in every direction. It was terrifying,” said Amina Ibrahim, a trader who witnessed the incident.

Another witness, Usman Abubakar, who was present in the market at the time, told reporters that he heard a loud bang before seeing plumes of smoke rising into the air. “People were screaming and running for their lives. It was total chaos. We couldn’t even figure out where to run because of the smoke and dust in the air,” he said.

Local law enforcement and emergency responders were quick to secure the area and begin rescue operations. “We acted fast. It could have been worse, but thank God we were able to evacuate most of the injured in time. We are thankful to the doctors and health workers who worked tirelessly to save lives,” said police officer Tunde Mohammed.

    A Call for Urgent Action

The explosion has once again raised serious questions about the lax regulation of local markets, especially in regard to the sale of dangerous materials. Talata Mafara, like many parts of northern Nigeria, has long struggled with the illegal trade of arms and explosives, a factor that has contributed to the region’s security challenges.

Local officials have called for more stringent measures to curb the sale of illegal firearms and gunpowder in public markets. “This explosion should serve as a wake-up call. We cannot continue to allow dangerous materials to be sold without proper oversight. We need to enforce stronger laws and ensure that markets are safe for all,” said Yari.

In response to the incident, the Zamfara State government has promised to investigate the causes of the explosion thoroughly. Governor Bello Matawalle expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that measures would be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“We will take every necessary step to ensure that those responsible for this tragic incident are held accountable. The safety and security of our people are of the utmost importance,” Governor Matawalle stated in a public address following the explosion.

The state government has also announced plans to engage with market leaders and law enforcement agencies to ensure that more stringent safety protocols are enforced in markets across Zamfara.

    Prayers for Peace and Healing

As Talata Mafara recovers from the shock of the explosion, the people of the town are calling for peace and unity in the face of this tragedy. Yari urged residents to come together in prayer for those who were affected by the explosion.

“We pray to Allah for the souls of the deceased, and for the swift recovery of those injured. This tragic event should not divide us, but rather bring us closer as a community,” he said.

In the wake of the explosion, many are hopeful that this incident will prompt the authorities to take stronger action against illegal arms sales and enhance safety in markets, ensuring that no more lives are lost due to preventable disasters.
