Akpoti-Uduaghan and Karimi Clash Over Senate Seating Arrangement, Akpabio Calls for Calm

A disagreement over seating arrangements led to a heated confrontation between two senators, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Steve Karimi, during a session of the Nigerian Senate on Thursday. The incident, which occurred on the floor of the Red Chamber, was brought under control by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who called for calm and urged the senators involved to seek resolution.

The issue arose when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, strongly protested the reallocation of her seat. In a dramatic move, she removed her name tag from her newly assigned seat and placed it back on her previous one. This act was accompanied by a verbal confrontation with Senator Karimi, who represents Kogi State, accusing him of being behind the seating reassignment.

Senator Karimi, visibly upset by the incident, raised a matter of privilege on the Senate floor. He explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions had disrupted the Senate proceedings and personally targeted him. “Before long, Sen. Natasha was shouting my name all over the place. I want to say that my privilege has been breached,” Karimi stated.

The matter quickly escalated when Karimi recalled how members of the Kogi caucus had previously supported Akpoti-Uduaghan when she first arrived in the Senate. “I don’t understand why the chamber should be turned upside down over seating arrangements. I want her to come out and apologise,” Karimi demanded.

The situation, if left unresolved, had the potential to affect the decorum and smooth functioning of the Senate. However, Senate President Akpabio stepped in to defuse the tension, urging both senators to approach the matter with restraint.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio addressed the Senate, appealing for calm and urging Senator Karimi to let go of the matter, despite Senate rules that could lead to disciplinary action. Akpabio, who has been a stabilising force in the Senate, reassured the lawmakers that the situation would be handled according to the appropriate procedures.

“I can see that you feel very hurt. You came under Order 10 of our rules. This is the Nigerian Senate. The matter, according to our rules, is to be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges. I appeal that we do not go further. The matter will be dealt with at the appropriate time,” Akpabio said.

While the clash between the two senators may seem trivial on the surface, seating arrangements in legislative bodies often carry deeper significance. In the Nigerian Senate, as in many other parliamentary systems, seating arrangements are not merely a matter of convenience but also a reflection of power dynamics, seniority, and political alliances.

The seating arrangements are often seen as a reflection of status within the chamber, and changes to those arrangements can lead to feelings of disrespect or discontent. For Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the reallocation of her seat may have felt like an affront to her standing and dignity. Her strong reaction was likely influenced by a desire to assert her rights and prevent what she saw as an unjust disruption of her position in the Senate.

Senator Karimi’s response, on the other hand, highlights the importance of decorum and professionalism in the Senate. While he voiced his concerns over the disruption caused by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions, he also called for an apology, highlighting his belief that the matter could be resolved through dialogue and mutual respect.

The Senate is made up of diverse political factions, each with its own agenda, priorities, and power bases. These internal dynamics often influence the relationships between senators, and conflicts over issues such as seating arrangements, committee assignments, and legislative priorities are not uncommon. The incident between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Karimi is a reminder of the delicate balance that must be maintained to ensure that the Senate operates smoothly.
