The government is determined to tackle this surge in violence and uphold the peace and security that it has worked hard to restore since it assumed office.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government expressed grave concern over recent reports of youths involved in cult-related killings, which have created a climate of fear and insecurity in Aba. Abia State has made significant strides in curbing cult activities since the current administration came into power. However, recent reports have suggested that some youth groups are again engaging in violent and criminal activities under the guise of cultism. The state government sees this as an affront to its earlier achievements in tackling such violence.

“The rise in cult-related killings is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by this administration,” said the statement. “We have worked hard to restore peace to this state, and we will not allow the peace we’ve built to be shattered by criminal elements.”

To address the current threat, the Abia State Government has drawn several measures designed to clamp down on cult-related activities and restore safety across the state, especially in Aba, where the problem has been most pronounced.

The state government has reaffirmed its stance of zero tolerance towards cultism, making it clear that any individual or group found engaging in cult-related activities will face the full force of the law.

The government has promised that security agencies will take strict action against any person or group engaging in cult violence. This includes the arrest and prosecution of offenders, with no room for leniency.
In response to the increasing violence, security agencies and intelligence officers have been mobilised to key areas, including schools, streets, and other public spaces. This is to identify and apprehend those involved in cultism before they can cause further harm.
The government has also issued a strong warning to cult members, urging them to leave the state immediately or face severe consequences. “Those who continue to indulge in these illegal activities must understand that they will be hunted down and dealt with decisively,” the statement warned.

The government assured law-abiding citizens that they should go about their daily activities without fear, as the administration is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents. The authorities have vowed to maintain a strong presence and enforce security across the state.
In addition to strengthening security measures, the government has called for the cooperation of the public in reporting any suspected cult activities. The government has provided emergency hotlines for residents to use in case they witness or have information about cult-related violence or criminal behaviour.

Cultism has been a persistent problem in various parts of Nigeria, particularly among the youth. Cult groups are often involved in criminal activities such as extortion, drug trafficking, and violent killings. These groups sometimes operate within schools and universities, recruiting young students and luring them into a life of crime and violence.

In Abia State, cultism has been a longstanding issue, and the state’s previous efforts to address the problem had achieved some success. However, recent reports suggest that these criminal groups are trying to regain control in certain parts of the state, particularly in Aba, a bustling city known for its commerce and industry.

The involvement of security forces is crucial in tackling cultism, and the government has stressed that all relevant law enforcement agencies, including the police and intelligence officers, will work together to stamp out the problem.
However, the government has also acknowledged that security forces alone cannot solve the problem of cultism. Public cooperation is essential. The government has urged residents to report any suspicious activities and to collaborate with law enforcement in the fight against crime. Community engagement is a key factor in ensuring that criminal elements are identified and brought to justice.

“The fight against cultism and criminal activities is a collective responsibility,” the statement read. “We need the support of every law-abiding citizen in Abia to win this battle.”
