A tragic road accident on Wednesday morning at Eldorado Cina Junction along Airport Road in Kano has claimed the lives of two people and left one other seriously injured. The incident, which occurred around 8:15 a.m., involved a collision between a commercial DAF truck and a private Jincheng motorcycle. Authorities have attributed the accident to dangerous driving, sparking renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command, six people were involved in the crash. Two of the victims died on the spot, while one other sustained serious injuries. Three others were fortunate to escape without harm.
The accident occurred when the commercial truck, which was traveling along the busy Airport Road, collided with the motorcycle, which was reportedly moving in the opposite direction. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the truck and motorcycle severely damaged after the crash.
“It was an awful sight. The truck was large and heavily damaged, while the motorcycle was completely wrecked. It all happened so fast,” said a witness who did not wish to be named.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, leaving behind the wreckage and the victims. Local residents and passers-by quickly rushed to the scene to assist, but the extent of the damage was too much for some to bear.
The Federal Road Safety Corps responded quickly to the incident, with their personnel arriving at the scene within three minutes of receiving the alert. Speaking on the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer for FRSC, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, confirmed the tragic loss of two lives and the serious injury sustained by another person.
“Our operatives acted swiftly to rescue the injured victim and transported him to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for medical attention,” Labaran stated. “The two deceased victims were taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for further processing. Our team was able to clear the scene and ensure that the area was safe.”
Labaran further disclosed that the victims of the crash were all male, and among them, three managed to escape without any injuries. Despite the swift response from the emergency services, the tragic outcome of the incident has left a dark cloud over the community.
In the wake of the crash, the wreckage of the vehicles and other recovered items were handed over to the Gwagwarwa Police Division for further investigation. Law enforcement authorities are working to track down the truck driver, who fled the scene shortly after the accident. The driver’s actions are believed to have contributed significantly to the severity of the crash, and police are hopeful that they will soon make an arrest.
“The authorities are doing their best to locate the driver who fled the scene,” said an officer involved in the investigation. “It is crucial that anyone involved in such accidents remains at the scene to assist with investigations.”
The FRSC has also issued a statement urging all motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly when driving in busy areas like the Airport Road, which often sees a high volume of traffic. Labaran emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future.
“This is a very unfortunate incident, and we deeply regret the loss of life,” Labaran said. “Our condolences go out to the families of the deceased, and we wish the injured victim a speedy recovery. This incident serves as a reminder that we all must be more responsible when driving, to avoid tragedies like this.”
This latest fatal accident comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Kano, a state that has seen a rise in traffic accidents in recent years. Authorities have consistently urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous driving, and stay vigilant while on the road. However, despite these repeated warnings, reckless driving and traffic violations remain common, leading to a number of preventable crashes.
Kano’s Airport Road is one of the busiest roads in the state, connecting the city to the airport and other key areas. The road is often used by both commercial vehicles and private cars, making it a hotspot for accidents. In particular, reckless driving, overspeeding, and failure to adhere to traffic regulations have been identified as major contributors to road accidents on this route.
Local residents have expressed concern about the frequency of accidents and the apparent lack of deterrent for those who engage in dangerous driving. Many are calling for stronger enforcement of traffic laws and increased penalties for those who break them.
“We need better enforcement of traffic laws,” said Aliyu Suleiman, a concerned resident. “Many people drive too fast, and it’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again. The government needs to take action to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads.”
Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for road safety education and the strict enforcement of traffic laws to prevent accidents like this one. While accidents are sometimes unavoidable, a large number of fatal crashes could be prevented through improved driving habits, better vehicle maintenance, and effective law enforcement.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” said Aminu Jibril, a traffic safety expert. “Drivers must be more responsible, but there also needs to be more public awareness about the importance of road safety. Local authorities must also ensure that traffic regulations are enforced effectively, and that violators face consequences.”
Jibril also pointed out that many Nigerian roads are in poor condition, which contributes to the frequency of accidents. He urged the government to invest in better road infrastructure to ensure safer driving conditions.
