In a critical move to restore order and address public outrage, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), following the brutal killings of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. This action comes as part of the state’s crackdown on illegal vigilante groups, which have been blamed for the deadly attack.

The gruesome killings occurred on Thursday, March 27, 2025, when a group of hunters, traveling back to the North, were ambushed and killed by members of an illegal vigilante group. The incident sparked widespread condemnation, particularly as many of the victims were from Kano State, raising concerns over inter-state relations and security in the region.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhikor Esq., the Edo State government confirmed the suspension of CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.) as the head of the Edo State Security Corps. Additionally, the governor announced that all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state under any guise would be suspended immediately.

“The government has reviewed the preliminary report on the unfortunate incident that occurred on March 27 in Uromi, and as a result, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups in Edo State. Furthermore, the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), has been suspended,” the statement read.

The government clarified that the vigilante group responsible for the killings was operating without authorization. It was not registered with the Edo State Security Corps and was thus deemed illegal. The statement further stressed that the actions of the group did not align with the objectives or values of the state government or the legal framework of the Edo State Security Corps.

“This local vigilante group was never profiled or registered with the Edo State Security Corps. Their actions do not reflect the core values, character, and principles of the Okpebholo administration, nor the objectives of the corps as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law,” the statement added.

Following the attack, the Edo State Government confirmed that 14 individuals had been arrested in connection with the killings. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement agencies, including a special team led by the Inspector General of Police, have launched a manhunt to capture other suspects linked to the heinous crime.

Governor Okpebholo has made it clear that his administration is committed to ensuring that justice is done in a transparent and swift manner. The governor reassured the public that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Justice will be swift, transparent, and decisive. The state government remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring that those responsible for this crime are held accountable,” Okpebholo said.

In a show of solidarity, the Edo State Government has reached out to the families of the victims, most of whom were from Kano State, as well as community leaders. This gesture aims to foster unity and promote peace between Edo State and Kano, both of which have seen tensions rise as a result of the killings.

“We have contacted the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, as the majority of the deceased were from Kano. The Edo State Government stands with them during this difficult time,” the statement said.

The relationship between Edo and Kano States has been strained due to the killings, and officials have called for calm and understanding from all parties involved. Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the Edo State Government would work closely with Kano State to ensure that justice is served and that the families of the victims receive the support they need.

Governor Okpebholo’s decision to suspend the security chief and crack down on illegal vigilante groups sends a strong message to the people of Edo State and the entire nation. It is a clear indication that the state government will no longer tolerate unauthorized security operations that undermine the rule of law and endanger public safety.

The suspension of CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.) marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to regain control over its security framework. Vigilante groups, especially those operating without oversight or regulation, have been a growing concern in various parts of Nigeria. While these groups sometimes emerge in response to inadequate security forces, their operations often lack proper training, accountability, and oversight, leading to incidents of abuse, corruption, and violence.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional rights, particularly the freedom of movement and the right to engage in lawful business. He emphasized that all Nigerians should feel safe and secure in Edo State, regardless of their background or where they come from.

This stance is important, especially given the growing concerns over rising insecurity across Nigeria. With many regions struggling to manage local militias, Okpebholo’s actions signal a firm commitment to addressing these challenges by reinforcing the role of legitimate security agencies and discouraging vigilante justice.

As the investigation into the Uromi killings continues, the Edo State Government has called for calm among residents and those affected by the incident. While the situation is still developing, officials have urged everyone to remain patient and trust in the state’s ability to handle the matter effectively.

“We urge all parties to remain calm as the state government remains committed to ensuring that justice is done in a most efficient, transparent, and proactive manner,” the statement concluded.

In the meantime, law enforcement agencies in Edo State are intensifying their efforts to dismantle illegal vigilante groups and restore public trust in the security system. While it remains to be seen how effective these efforts will be, the governor’s bold action serves as a step toward addressing the growing security concerns in the state.
