Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged the Edo State Government to conduct a public parade of the suspects arrested in connection with the brutal killing of 16 Kano indigenes in Uromi, Edo State. Governor Yusuf’s demand for a public display of the accused is part of his commitment to ensuring that justice is not only done but is visibly seen to be done.

The tragic incident occurred in the Udene area of Uromi, Uromi Local Government Area, where 16 Kano indigenes were killed. The victims were traveling through Edo State when they were ambushed and murdered in what has been described as a brutal and senseless act of violence. The horrific killings have sparked outrage across Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, where the victims were from, and have raised concerns about the growing issue of ethnic violence in the country.

Governor Yusuf made his remarks on Monday when he received Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who led a delegation to Kano to offer condolences over the tragic killings. During the meeting, Governor Yusuf emphasized the need for full justice for the victims, including the public parade of the suspects, to reassure Nigerians that the perpetrators would be held accountable for their actions.

“We appreciate the prompt action taken so far, but justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. The people of Kano, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve to see those responsible for this massacre brought to justice publicly,” Governor Yusuf stated firmly. The Kano governor reiterated that public accountability in the justice process is essential to restore public confidence and prevent further violence.

Alongside the call for the public parade of the suspects, Governor Yusuf also stressed the importance of compensating the families of the victims. He called on the Edo State Government to ensure that the promised compensation was swiftly executed, so that the grieving families could begin to rebuild their lives after the devastating loss of their loved ones.

“The compensation promised is a commendable step, but it must be executed without delay to support the grieving families who have lost their breadwinners,” he added. Many of the victims were primary breadwinners, and the loss has left their families struggling in the aftermath of the brutal killings.

The Kano State Governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly directing security agencies to take immediate action in response to the killings. Governor Yusuf emphasized that such acts of violence should not be allowed to escalate and become a recurring problem, particularly with regard to ethnic violence, which has plagued Nigeria for years.

“We appreciate President Tinubu’s swift directive to security agencies to take immediate action. However, these kinds of atrocities must never be allowed to happen again in any part of Nigeria,” Governor Yusuf stated. He further emphasized the importance of national unity and the need for a collective effort to ensure peace and justice throughout the country.

Earlier during the visit, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, expressed his deep sorrow over the killings and assured Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano that justice would be served swiftly. Governor Okpebholo’s administration has taken significant steps to address the situation and ease tensions within the local communities in Edo State.

“I rushed to Uromi as soon as I got the news. I met with the Hausa community there, and we worked to ease tensions. I want to assure you that those responsible will face the full wrath of the law,” Governor Okpebholo assured the delegation from Kano. His statement highlights the seriousness with which the Edo State Government is treating the incident and its commitment to upholding justice.

Okpebholo further noted that his government has been working to prevent the situation from escalating and is focused on ensuring that the perpetrators face justice. He also commended the efforts of the security agencies in swiftly apprehending the suspects and emphasized that the Edo State Government would continue to collaborate with Kano and other relevant authorities to ensure that peace is restored in the region.

The killings in Uromi have sparked renewed concerns about ethnic violence in Nigeria, with many seeing the incident as a troubling reminder of the country’s ongoing struggles with ethnic tensions. The victims, all indigenes of Kano State, were reportedly attacked while passing through Edo State, raising fears of a resurgence of violent ethnic conflicts in the country.

Governor Yusuf’s call for a public parade of the suspects and the demand for justice reflect the rising frustration among Nigerians about the lack of effective action to curb ethnic violence and ensure the safety of citizens across the country. The Kano State Government, along with other concerned groups, has called for more proactive measures to prevent further ethnic clashes and to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

“We cannot allow this kind of violence to spread,” Governor Yusuf said, calling for unity and greater understanding among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. “We must work together to ensure that justice is done and to prevent further loss of lives.”

The demand for a public parade of the suspects has received widespread support from many residents of Kano State, who have called for transparency in the handling of the case. Many citizens have expressed their desire for a public display of accountability to send a strong message that such violence will not be tolerated.
