20 Million Nigerians to Benefit from New Telecom Plan

    Share

The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria will receive telecommunications equipment and fibre optic infrastructure valued at \$3 billion starting June 2025. This was revealed by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, during a panel session at the Nigeria Development Update (NDU) event organized by the World Bank.

According to the minister, the first shipment, worth \$1 billion, will include key telecommunications equipment. This will be followed by another \$2 billion worth of fibre optic cables aimed at expanding internet access and boosting network quality across the country.

Dr. Tijani explained that this massive investment will help bridge Nigeria’s digital divide, especially for over 20 million citizens who currently have no access to telecom services. A pilot project targeting these underserved areas is expected to launch soon.

The announcement came during the Nigeria Development Update — a bi-annual World Bank report that evaluates the country’s economic and social performance, policy directions, and offers strategies to tackle national challenges.

This infrastructure rollout is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s digital economy, improve connectivity in rural areas, and support innovation-driven growth.
