Court to Rule on Akpabio, Natasha Contempt Case June 27

    Share

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 27, 2025, to deliver judgment in the ongoing contempt claims between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Justice Binta Nyako announced the date on Tuesday, following the adoption of court processes by lawyers representing both parties. The court will also rule on a preliminary objection filed by Akpabio and other defendants, challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

Justice Nyako explained that she would first rule on the contempt issues before addressing the jurisdictional challenge. If the court finds it lacks jurisdiction, the case will be dismissed. If not, the judge will then proceed to rule on the main suit.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was present in court for the hearing. She had filed a contempt charge against Akpabio and others, accusing them of disobeying an earlier court order. In turn, Akpabio filed a separate contempt suit against her.

The legal battle highlights deepening political tensions within the Senate. The case is seen as a test of judicial interpretation on matters of legislative conduct and compliance with court orders.
