Senate Urges Military to Reinforce Borno, Yobe

The Senate has called on the Nigerian military to urgently redeploy troops and advanced equipment to Borno and Yobe States in response to a fresh wave of deadly Boko Haram attacks.

The resolution came after a motion raised by Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Munguno, during Tuesday’s plenary. He cited the killing of over a dozen soldiers in Marte, Monguno Local Government Area, on May 12, and a subsequent attack on Gajiram in Nganzai LGA early Tuesday as signs of a growing security threat.

Munguno warned that Boko Haram insurgents are now using drones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), increasing both civilian and military casualties and threatening transportation in the region.

The Senate urged the military high command to immediately reinforce the North-East with more troops and modern equipment. It also directed its committees on Army and Air Force to ensure the implementation of the directive.

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum strongly condemned the recent attacks, including bombings along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road and assaults on several communities such as Chibok, Gwoza, and Kala Balge.

Zulum expressed sorrow over the deaths of soldiers and civilians, including two education workers killed by an IED on May 12. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the military and working with federal authorities to restore peace.

“These acts of terror are deeply condemnable,” Zulum said, urging residents of Borno to remain strong and hopeful. “This is a partial eclipse — and we shall overcome it, Insha Allah.”
