Tension gripped the Mbosi community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday following a deadly explosion that claimed the lives of three children and injured another.
Initial reports from residents alleged that the blast came from a military helicopter, sparking fears of an accidental bombing. However, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strongly denied any involvement.
Speaking on the matter, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, spokesperson for the NAF, stated clearly that no military operation was carried out in or around the area at the time of the incident.
Community leader and President General of Mbosi, Azuka Innocent Okolie, also dismissed military involvement, confirming that the explosion was not caused by any official security forces.
In a statement posted on social media, Okolie said: “It is with a heavy heart that I address you today, especially in light of the recent tragic loss of three of our children in the explosion at Agwunnaga Mbosi.”
Okolie instead blamed the Eastern Security Network (ESN) for planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) within the community. He said this attack is one of several reportedly linked to the group, with similar incidents recorded in nearby areas such as Isseke.
He urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious movements to prevent future tragedies. “Let us work together to protect our community and prevent further harm,” he added.
As of press time, the identity of those behind the explosion is still being investigated, but security experts have called for a swift and thorough probe to restore confidence among residents.
Mbosi, like many communities in the southeast, has faced rising insecurity linked to separatist groups and violent clashes in recent years.
