The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has deposed Mr. Ovbokhan Igbinovia as the Chief Priest (Ohen) of Okhuoromi Community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State over acts deemed as sacrilegious and a violation of Benin customs.
The decision was announced on Thursday at the Oba’s palace in Benin City. The palace accused Igbinovia of engaging in land grabbing, extortion, and unauthorized demolition of private properties—actions considered not only illegal but against the sacred traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin, relayed the Oba’s verdict to the elders of Okhuoromi, led by village head Pa. Oghagbon Edosomwan. He informed them that the community would now be overseen directly by the Odionwere on behalf of the Oba.
Idah, joined by other palace chiefs including Chief Isaac Oyeoba and Chief Uyi Okungbowa, also addressed the victims of the deposed priest’s actions. He warned that anyone who defied the Oba’s decision would face the wrath of the law and the ancestors.
Oba Ewuare II emphasized that the Benin throne does not condone any form of criminality, even if disguised as tradition. He called for calm in the community and assured affected residents that justice would be done.
He added that palace chiefs had been assigned to investigate the matter further and evaluate the level of damage. The Oba encouraged residents with complaints to present their evidence, including photos and videos, to the proper authorities for review.
