The family of Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the Obalohun of Okoloke in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, has called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to help them raise the N50 million ransom demanded by his kidnappers.
The monarch was abducted from his palace around 2 a.m. last Thursday by unknown gunmen, who took him to an undisclosed location. According to palace sources, reports claiming the ransom has been reduced to N12 million are false.
“As of Sunday, we have been able to gather N25 million through personal efforts and by selling family belongings,” a family member said. “But the kidnappers are still insisting on the full N50 million. They initially demanded N100 million.”
The family expressed deep frustration over what they described as abandonment by political leaders, especially those from Kogi West. They named several prominent politicians, including Senators and House of Representatives members, whom they say have not responded to calls for help.
“Our king is not in good health. He is on special medication, and his condition is deteriorating,” the family said. “We’ve even sent his medicine to the kidnappers after they asked for it, but they’ve refused to release him until the full amount is paid.”
The family is now appealing to the general public — including teachers, traders, bankers, and religious leaders — to support them in raising the remaining amount. The Hausa community in the area is also reportedly making contributions, citing the monarch’s fairness and support to them over the years.
“We are also appealing to security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue him alive. We value him greatly and pray for his safe return,” the family added.
The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in Kogi and other parts of Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become a disturbing trend.
