The National Sports Commission (NSC) has revealed plans to include Nigerian athletes based abroad in future editions of the National Sports Festival (NSF).

Chairman of the commission, Shehu Dikko, made this known on Sunday in Abeokuta while speaking to journalists at the ongoing 22nd edition of the biennial sports event.

Dikko said the aim of the NSF goes beyond winning medals. According to him, the festival is a platform to identify, develop, and promote Nigerian sporting talents—both local and international.

“Looking ahead, we’re considering inviting our best athletes, including those in the diaspora, to the next festival,” Dikko said. “It’s not just about victory but about showcasing and nurturing our national talents.”

He explained that by comparing local performances with African and world records, Nigeria can better assess the progress of its athletes and set clear targets for improvement.

Dikko added that what matters is not where the athletes come from, but the quality and dedication they bring. With the right training, support, and publicity, he believes Nigerian athletes can excel globally.

He also dismissed concerns about state representation, saying the festival is more about unity and growth than origin. “Sports is one of our greatest national assets. It unites us. Once you’re involved, you’re part of the family,” he said.

The NSC boss emphasized that the festival’s structure encourages states to step up their game, promoting healthy competition and overall development of sports across the country.
