The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across 14 states from Wednesday, May 28 to Friday, May 30.
According to the agency’s forecast, states expected to be affected include Bayelsa, Rivers, parts of Delta, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Abia, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger.
NiMet, in its bulletin, said the rains may be accompanied by strong winds and could lead to flash flooding in some areas. The agency warned residents and motorists in the affected states to take necessary precautions.
It specifically advised against driving through floodwaters or surface runoff, noting that such waters often have strong undercurrents that can pose serious risks to life and property.
The forecast also highlighted other possible hazards such as slippery roads and reduced visibility, which could disrupt road traffic and pose dangers to commuters.
“People living in flood-prone areas should remain alert and take steps to protect their property. We also advise road users to exercise caution during the period,” the agency stated.
NiMet’s alert is part of ongoing efforts to prepare Nigerians for the peak of the rainy season, which typically brings heavy rainfall, especially in the southern and central parts of the country.
In recent years, heavy rains and flash floods have caused severe damage to homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure in many parts of Nigeria. The agency hopes that early warnings will help reduce the impact of such natural events.
The public has been urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and heed safety advice during the forecast period.
Authorities in the affected states, especially emergency response agencies, are also expected to be on standby to respond quickly to any incidents that may arise.
NiMet continues to play a key role in providing timely weather information to help citizens, farmers, and government agencies plan and prepare for climate-related events.
