SON Warns Against Rising Adulterated Lubricants in Nigeria

    Share

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has raised serious concerns over the increasing influx of adulterated lubricants and engine oil in the country. The agency warned that these fake products pose significant risks to vehicles, machinery, and the nation’s economy.

Dr. Ifeanyin Okeke, Director-General of SON, made the call during a sensitization workshop held on Wednesday in Osogbo, Osun State. The event, themed “Impact of Adulterated/Lubricating Engine Oil on Nigeria’s Economy,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss the dangers of fake lubricants flooding the market.

Represented by SON State Coordinator, Mr. Razak Oyewopo, Okeke explained that adulterated lubricants are more than just poor-quality products; they have far-reaching effects that could undermine Nigeria’s economic progress.

“Adulterated lubricants shorten the lifespan of engines and increase repair costs. This not only affects individual vehicle owners but also the manufacturing and service sectors, lowering productivity across the board,” Oyewopo said.

He added that improper lubrication often leads to mechanical failures, causing costly repairs, equipment downtime, and loss of revenue for businesses. These consequences, he stressed, are especially damaging for a country like Nigeria that is striving to recover and grow economically.

Okeke urged consumers to demand certified, high-quality lubricants to protect their investments and support a more sustainable economy. He also called for increased public awareness to educate consumers about the dangers of using substandard products.

“This is a collective fight. Stakeholders must commit to transparency, best practices, and ethical dealings to clean up the lubricants market,” he emphasized.

Mr. Tijjani Sahib, Chairman of Engine Oil Lubricant Dealers in Osun, praised SON for its efforts to promote genuine products. He urged his members to embrace only quality lubricants for the safety of engines and other equipment.

Additionally, Mr. Sangosanya Olatunji, SON Coordinator for Ekiti State and the workshop lecturer, highlighted the benefits of using genuine lubricants. He noted that good-quality engine oil improves fuel efficiency, reduces harmful emissions, and extends the intervals between oil changes.

Olatunji called on all stakeholders, including dealers, manufacturers, and consumers, to support SON’s mandate in ensuring that only authentic and safe lubricants circulate in the Nigerian market.

The workshop was part of ongoing efforts by SON to safeguard consumers and protect Nigeria’s economy from the harmful effects of counterfeit products, which have become a growing challenge in recent years.

Without urgent action, the prevalence of adulterated engine oils risks damaging vehicles, increasing costs for businesses, and slowing the country’s economic development. SON’s call for collaboration aims to strengthen market integrity and promote sustainable growth.
