Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has announced that the cargo terminal of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is ready and will soon begin operations. The governor made this known on Thursday during a special ceremony at Okpara Square, Enugu, to mark his administration’s two years in office.

Speaking at the event, Mbah said the airport’s cargo operations would enable the movement of goods from Enugu to destinations around the world. He described it as a significant step towards realizing a tech-driven logistics and trading hub that would benefit Igbo entrepreneurs and boost the state’s economy.

“Our airport will soon become operational. That way, we can move cargo from Enugu across the entire world,” Mbah said. “What that means is that our tech-enabled logistics and trading dream will come true to every Igbo businessman.”

Governor Mbah also highlighted his administration’s achievements over the past two years, including the construction of over 800 kilometers of roads across both urban and rural communities in the state.

“In our first road project, we flagged off 71 urban roads and 20 rural road projects, connecting our people and reviving local economies,” he stated.

Mbah further recalled that within the first 180 days in office, his government restored clean water to parts of Enugu metropolis through the Ninth Mile Water Scheme. Other milestones include the revival of the school feeding programme and the launch of a digital business portal to ease business registration.

In the area of public service, he said the state had begun civil service reforms by deploying digital verification to eliminate ghost workers and ensure only genuine staff are on the payroll.

Security has also received attention. Mbah said the state introduced a Distress Response Squad (DRS) and installed an artificial intelligence-powered surveillance system, which has reportedly reduced urban crime by 80%.

He also announced the completion of five ultra-modern transport terminals across the state. “We delivered Holy Ghost Terminal 1 for interstate travel with a sky bridge linking Terminal 2 for intra-city transport. Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka terminals are ready for commissioning,” he added.

Mbah said that 33% of the state’s budget had been allocated to education — surpassing the global benchmark — and revealed plans to roll out 260 Smart Green Schools. These schools will feature digital whiteboards, science laboratories, solar power, and facilities for teaching artificial intelligence, robotics, and virtual reality.

“These spaces are where our children will no longer dream of opportunities, but grow learning how to create them,” Mbah said.

He also disclosed plans to construct 260 new primary healthcare centres across the state, as part of a broader plan to improve access to education and healthcare in every community.
