Thousands of motorists and commuters were left stranded along the busy Abuja-Kaduna highway, following a major traffic gridlock in the Bishini area near Jere and Katari towns.
The road, a vital link between Abuja and the Northern states, came to a standstill as private and commercial vehicles were trapped in long queues that stretched for several kilometers. Travelers, including families, long-distance drivers, and traders, complained of being stuck for hours without clear information on the cause of the hold-up.
The congestion is believed to be part of a familiar annual pattern that often occurs during certain peak periods, especially as travelers head into Northern states for family visits, ceremonies, or religious activities. Many commuters expressed frustration, wondering why authorities have not yet found a lasting solution to the recurring traffic issue in that area.
“It’s always the same story every year. Once you reach between Jere and Katari, you know trouble has started,” said Musa Ibrahim, a driver who was on his way to Zaria. “We left Abuja before sunrise, and now we are just sitting here with no movement.”
Though no accidents were immediately reported, the situation continued to worsen into the afternoon, raising concerns about safety and delays in travel plans.
The Abuja-Kaduna highway is one of Nigeria’s most important routes, connecting the Federal Capital Territory to the North-West region. It also serves as a major transport line for goods and agricultural produce.
Despite its importance, the highway has been plagued by issues ranging from traffic congestion to road safety and security concerns. In previous years, similar gridlocks have caused travellers to spend entire nights on the road, prompting calls for better traffic management and road expansion projects.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of traffic jam or what is being done to ease the situation. Meanwhile, travellers are advised to exercise patience or consider alternative routes where possible.
