Jubilation in Plateau as Security Forces Kill 5 Suspected Kidnappers

There is widespread celebration in several communities across Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State following the killing of at least five suspected kidnappers during a security raid in Kadil Masudu village.

The joint operation, which took place around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, was carried out by security personnel and local vigilantes. It targeted a gang of kidnappers who have long terrorised the area, causing fear and hardship for residents.

The success of the raid marks a major breakthrough for communities in Wase, where banditry and kidnapping have become persistent threats. Just two weeks ago, Dogon Ruwa community in Bashar District was attacked during market day. In that incident, one person was killed and a businessman was kidnapped.

Confirming the Tuesday operation, local youth leader Shapi’I Sambo said that although one vigilante member lost his life during the clash and others were injured, the operation led to the rescue of a victim who had been held captive for over a month.

“It was a deliberate and well-planned attack by security personnel and vigilantes,” Sambo said. “We have suffered for too long from bandits and kidnappers, paying millions in ransom. That is why we had to take this bold step.”

According to him, the operation lasted nearly an hour, and the criminals were dislodged from their hideouts. He praised the Nigerian Army and other security agents for their bravery.

“Many people are happy because these kidnappers were removed from their base. The soldiers really showed courage. They have done what the people have long waited for,” Sambo added.

Although full details are still emerging, residents described the scene as a turning point in their fight against insecurity. Many villagers reportedly poured into the streets of Wase and nearby areas, expressing relief and hope that peace could finally return.

The Wase axis of Plateau State has been plagued by criminal gangs involved in kidnapping for ransom, with victims often held in remote forest locations for weeks or months. Families have been forced to sell property and raise huge sums of money to secure the release of loved ones.

While the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), a military task force responsible for maintaining peace in the state, has been active in the region, residents say this week’s success has restored some faith in the security system.

Attempts to reach the spokesperson of OPSH, Major Samson Zhakom, for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.

Local leaders have now called on the federal and state governments to provide more support to security operatives and vigilante groups so they can build on the recent success and ensure lasting peace in Wase and surrounding areas.

For many in Plateau, the Tuesday operation is not just a military success — it’s a sign that the tide may finally be turning against the criminals who have held their communities hostage for too long..
