Super Eagles Hold Russia to 1–1 Draw in Moscow

    Share

The Super Eagles of Nigeria came from behind to secure a 1–1 draw against Russia in an international friendly played on Friday in Moscow. Despite not putting out their best performance, the Nigerian team showed resilience and spirit to avoid defeat on foreign soil.

The match, played at the VTB Arena in Moscow, was a test of strength and strategy for both teams. Russia took the lead in the 27th minute following a costly error by Nigeria’s defender, Semi Ajayi, who inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net while trying to clear a dangerous cross.

Russia continued to press but were unable to double their lead, despite recording 10 shots in total. Only two of those efforts, however, forced saves from the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper.

Nigeria, on the other hand, grew into the game as the minutes passed. Their persistence paid off in the 71st minute when substitute striker Tolu Arokodare took advantage of a poor clearance by the Russian goalkeeper. Arokodare calmly slotted home to bring the Super Eagles back on level terms.

The equaliser sparked renewed energy in the Nigerian side, who then pushed for a winner. Despite creating some good chances and ending the game with six shots—four of which were on target—they could not break the deadlock again.

Though the match ended in a draw, the Super Eagles coaching staff will take positives from the performance, particularly the team’s ability to respond to adversity in a tough away fixture.

Tolu Arokodare’s goal also adds to his growing confidence as he continues to make a case for regular inclusion in the national team setup.

For Russia, the result extends their unbeaten run in international friendlies, though they would be disappointed not to have capitalised on their early advantage.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, are using the friendly matches to prepare for upcoming competitive fixtures, including the next round of qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Friday’s draw gives Nigeria something to build on as they look to fine-tune their squad and tactics in the months ahead.
