President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday officially commissioned the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, a major infrastructure project designed to improve water access for residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The ceremony, held in Abuja on June 16, 2025, marks the completion of a long-awaited project aimed at delivering clean, safe water to over 50 districts across the capital.
President Tinubu praised the Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for his leadership and commitment to delivering people-focused projects.
“This project is not just about water pipes. It is about equity, about giving every part of Abuja access to basic needs,” Tinubu said. “This is what the Renewed Hope Agenda is about – real progress that touches lives.”
The President described the water supply network as a major step in his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure and social services across the country.
“We are laying the foundation for healthier families and stronger communities. Water is life. It is used to drink, to grow food, to stay clean, to build. These are the building blocks of dignity,” he said.
Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike explained that the Greater Abuja Water Project was first awarded in 2017 under the *Partnership for African Development* initiative.
The \$470 million project was largely funded by the Chinese government through the China Exim Bank, covering 85% of the total cost. The remaining 15% was contributed by Nigeria’s Federal Government and the FCT Administration.
“We sincerely thank you, Mr. President, for pushing the completion of this project. Your support and that of the National Assembly made this possible,” Wike said.
He added that procurement is already ongoing to extend water access to satellite towns such as Bwari, Kubwa, and Karu. The new phase of the project will be handled by China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), another major Chinese construction firm.
The Chinese Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires in Nigeria, Mr. Zhang Yi, congratulated the Nigerian government, calling the project a “symbol of deep friendship and strong cooperation” between the two nations.
He revealed that with the completion of this new water network, Abuja’s water supply capacity has tripled, giving more residents access to clean and reliable drinking water.
The Greater Abuja Water Network includes the construction of large-scale water pipes in Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6 of the Abuja masterplan, reaching previously underserved areas in the FCT.
President Tinubu also used the occasion to send condolences to the people of Benue State following recent attacks that claimed nearly 200 lives. He said he has spoken to the state governor and would personally visit Benue on Wednesday.
“We are one family living in different rooms of the same house. We must learn to manage our anger and frustrations,” Tinubu said, calling for peace and unity in the state.
He urged communities across the country to work together in peace and harmony, especially during difficult times.
