A tragic accident occurred early Sunday morning along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, when a 40-foot container fell off a truck and crushed a commercial minibus, killing the driver and injuring three others.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Mack truck, with registration number MUS 729 XY, reportedly suffered a brake failure before crashing into the minibus, commonly known as “Korope.”
The driver of the minibus died on the spot. Three passengers — two women and a man — were rescued by LASTMA officials and handed over to medical personnel for immediate attention. While they had no visible injuries, they were taken for medical evaluation.
The crash caused serious traffic congestion in the area, spilling into nearby streets including Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA quickly put traffic control measures in place to manage the situation.
In a swift response, the truck driver, who allegedly tried to flee the scene, was arrested by LASTMA operatives and handed over to the Nigeria Police. Officers from Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions were also present at the scene.
Personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police worked together to secure the accident site, recover the victim’s body, and restore order.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, **Hon. Sola Giwa**, expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and stressed the importance of enforcing road safety standards for heavy-duty vehicles.
“Truck operators must follow strict safety procedures,” he said. “Every articulated vehicle must undergo proper mechanical inspection, especially of braking systems, before hitting the road. We must prevent these avoidable tragedies.”
Hon. Giwa also assured Lagosians of the government’s continued efforts to enforce roadworthiness checks and improve emergency response systems across the state.
