Alhaja Kafilat Kaola, a well-known Islamic scholar based in Ibadan, has been remanded at Oke Kura Correctional Facility in Ilorin, Kwara State. This follows a defamation case filed against her by another prominent cleric, Alhaji Taofeek Akeugbagold.
Kaola had publicly accused Akeugbagold of being a “diabolic cleric” and warned those seeking Islamic knowledge to avoid him. Akeugbagold denied the allegations and claimed that Kaola’s statements damaged his reputation and business. He challenged her to provide evidence supporting her claims.
During Monday’s court session at the Upper Area Court in Ganmo, Kaola’s lawyer asked the court to grant bail on self-recognisance, highlighting her public status and promise not to flee. However, the lawyer representing Akeugbagold opposed the bail, citing a previous case where Kaola was involved in a similar matter.
To back his opposition, the plaintiff’s lawyer showed a viral video where Kaola was seen insulting a judge and a lawyer in connection with that earlier case. He argued this behavior disqualified her from receiving bail.
After hearing both sides, the judge ordered Kaola to be remanded at the correctional facility until the next hearing scheduled for July 17, 2025.
This case has sparked discussions about the limits of free speech and respect among Islamic scholars, as well as the role of the courts in resolving disputes within the religious community.
