The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised concerns over the UTME result of Chinedu Okeke, who was recently announced as the highest scorer in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made the announcement on Tuesday during the Board’s 2025 policy meeting held in Abuja. He revealed that Okeke, an indigene of Anambra State, scored 375 and applied to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos.
However, Prof. Oloyede said the Board discovered some irregularities in Okeke’s records. According to JAMB, data shows that Okeke was previously admitted to study Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and is still an active student there.
JAMB wrote to UNN to verify the information, and the university confirmed that Okeke is a medical student who is currently doing well academically.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communications Advisor, said this development raised serious concerns. He noted that the law does not permit a student to matriculate twice, and being an undergraduate gives Okeke an unfair advantage over other UTME candidates.
“He is registered as a student in UNN and is also applying for another course. This is suspicious. We are suspecting he may have written the UTME on behalf of someone else,” Dr. Benjamin said.
He also pointed out inconsistencies in Okeke’s records, where he claimed to be from the South-East in one form, and from Lagos State in another.
“We suspect he is a mercenary in the examination,” Dr. Benjamin added.
Meanwhile, JAMB announced other top scorers in the 2025 UTME. John Ayuba from Gombe State came second with 374, followed by Olayinka Jimoh from Kwara State who scored 373.
Others who scored 373 include Ayibo Roberts (Rivers), Chibueze Omonugbo (Enugu), Tunmise Olawepo (Kwara), and Leslie Afinotan (Delta). Chukwuemeka Azoyenime (Delta), Emmanuel Oyebode (Ogun), and Cecil Omigie (Edo) each scored 372.
JAMB says further investigations are ongoing and promised to take appropriate action once all facts are verified.
