The United States government has announced new visa rules for Nigerian citizens, limiting most non-immigrant visas to a single entry and a three-month validity period.

This new policy, which took effect today, July 8, 2025, applies to common visa types such as business and tourist visas. Visas issued before this date will not be affected.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that the change is part of a global visa reciprocity review by the U.S. Department of State. The move is in response to Nigeria’s visa policy for American citizens, which also limits them to short-term entry.

“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will now be single-entry visas valid for three months,” the embassy said. “This change is based on reciprocity and applies immediately.”

The embassy emphasized that visa policies can change at any time, depending on how countries treat American citizens in return.

This development may affect frequent Nigerian travelers to the U.S., who will now need to apply for new visas more often, compared to the previous long-term, multiple-entry visas many were used to.
