FCT Teachers Call Off 3-Month Strike, Resume Classes July 9

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their over three-month-long strike and will return to classrooms on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The decision was announced by the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in a communiqué released after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the union, the strike was called off after teachers received their new minimum wage along with five months’ salary arrears on July 8.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the statement said.

The strike, which began in March 2025, brought academic activities in primary schools across the FCT to a halt, affecting thousands of pupils.

The NUT credited the resolution to the intervention of the FCT Minister, who met with key stakeholders to resolve the issue. As part of the agreement, the government released N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue to pay the teachers and clear part of their outstanding entitlements.

The union added that a special committee would be formed within two weeks to address the remaining arrears and create a plan for steady funding of teachers’ wages.

However, the NUT warned that the strike would resume immediately if the government fails to honour its part of the agreement.

The union also appreciated FCT teachers for their patience and endurance, and thanked traditional rulers, civil society groups, and others who supported them throughout the strike.
