Tragedy struck in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State on Thursday as a Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) student allegedly beat his teacher to death during a quarrel over a seized school cap.
The incident happened at UBE Secondary School, Oju Centre, when 16-year-old Friday Ogamude reportedly confronted his teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, aged 35, over a cap that was confiscated in May 2025.
Eyewitnesses said the argument turned violent, and the student allegedly attacked the teacher. Mr. Oyibe collapsed during the scuffle and was rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju, where he was confirmed dead on arrival by medical staff.
His body has been taken to the General Hospital mortuary in Oju for autopsy.
Police have since arrested the student and described the incident as “deeply troubling.” The Benue State Police Command has promised a full investigation and assured the public that justice will be served.
The shocking incident has sparked concern among parents, teachers, and education officials, who are calling for urgent action to address rising student violence in schools.
