The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised to conduct free, fair, and credible bye-elections in three constituencies across Kaduna State on August 16, 2025.
This assurance was given by the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the state, Prof. Saidu Babura-Ahmad, during a one-day stakeholder engagement in Kaduna on Friday.
The affected constituencies are Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, and Zaria Kewaye and Zaria Sabon Gari State Constituencies.
Addressing political stakeholders, civil society groups, and security agencies, Babura-Ahmad said INEC is fully prepared and committed to transparency and fairness in the exercise.
“This meeting is to formally introduce myself as the new REC in Kaduna and to assure everyone that I will be fair to all,” he said. “We are here to brief you on our detailed preparations for the upcoming bye-elections.”
The REC revealed that elections will take place in 33 Registration Areas and across 1,169 polling units, with more than 4,800 ad hoc staff expected to be deployed. He also said 947 vehicles will be used to support logistics during the exercise.
Prof. Babura-Ahmad further noted that INEC is working around the clock to ensure success, including special security and transport arrangements to reach difficult terrains and ensure no voter is left out, even in high-risk or hard-to-reach areas.
The August 16 bye-elections are seen as crucial for testing the strength of political parties in Kaduna ahead of the 2027 general elections.
