The Labour Party (LP) has declared that its 2027 presidential ticket is open to all aspirants, with no automatic candidate including former presidential flagbearer, Mr. Peter Obi.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, during a press briefing. Arabambi said the party has learnt from what he described as “mistakes” made during the 2023 elections.

Peter Obi, who ran under the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election and came third with victories in 12 states including the Federal Capital Territory, is still officially a member of the party. However, he recently joined a political coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fueling speculation about his next move ahead of 2027.

Arabambi did not mince words, calling the coalition a “Yahoo Yahoo” arrangement and accusing its members of being part of the political structure that, according to him, plunged Nigeria into hardship between 2015 and 2023.

“We wish Obi well in that ungodly coalition,” he said. “But let it be clear — the Labour Party ticket is open. There will be a primary election, and no aspirant will be favoured this time.”

He further criticised Obi’s 2023 campaign, describing it as a populist movement that failed to deliver genuine leadership, and said the party must correct the error going into 2027.

Arabambi’s comments highlight growing tension within the Labour Party, particularly over Obi’s political future and the internal direction of the party post-2023.

The 2027 general elections are still two years away, but political positioning is already heating up across party lines, with early battles like this shaping the road ahead.
