Algeria’s head coach, Farid Benstiti, has said his team expects a tough match when they face the Super Falcons of Nigeria in their final group game at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday.
Speaking to CAFonline, Benstiti described the game as a major challenge for the North African side, who currently sit on four points after two group matches. Algeria needs at least a draw against Nigeria to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.
“This kind of match makes a team grow. If we manage to put Nigeria in trouble, then we’ll have reached a new level,” he said.
The Super Falcons, nine-time champions of the WAFCON, have already qualified for the next round and remain favourites in the tournament. Nigeria defeated Algeria in two friendly matches last year, winning 2-0 and 4-0 respectively.
Sunday’s match will determine Algeria’s fate in the competition and test their progress under Benstiti’s leadership.
