English club Chelsea will now wear a special gold badge for the next four years after defeating Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 3-0 in the final of the newly rebranded FIFA Club World Cup.
The Blues dominated the match on Sunday, with Cole Palmer stealing the show. He scored two early goals before assisting Joao Pedro, who chipped in a classy third goal past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The victory handed Chelsea more than just the trophy and the £100 million prize money. They also earned the right to wear FIFA’s prestigious gold champions badge on their jerseys — a first under the tournament’s new rules.
Previously, Club World Cup winners could only wear the badge for one year. In 2019, Liverpool were even restricted by the Premier League to wearing it in only one match.
However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has now restructured the competition to be held every four years, giving winners like Chelsea the rare honour of wearing the gold badge until the next tournament.
This marks Chelsea’s second global club title, following their first Club World Cup win in 2021.
