The Abia State Government has officially lifted the ban on the operations of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) across the state.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, after a meeting with NURTW representatives from both the state and national leadership.
Ukaegbu said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to fairness and improving the transport system in Abia. He also assured that Governor Alex Otti remains focused on creating a smooth and efficient transport environment for all residents.
Reacting to the development, the National President of the NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as MC Oluomo), through his deputy, Aliyu Isaa Ore, thanked the state government for lifting the ban. He promised that the union would operate in line with the policies of Governor Otti’s administration.
Chukwuma Azode, who was recently elected as the chairman of NURTW in Abia, also addressed the gathering. He pledged to lead the union in a peaceful and orderly manner. According to him, the era of lawlessness and disorder that previously plagued the union is over.
The ban on NURTW activities in Abia had been in place due to concerns over misconduct and disorder within the union. With the ban now lifted, stakeholders are hopeful for a new chapter in the state’s transport sector.
