A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Lucky Ogbeijielele, has been arrested by Canadian police in connection with the stabbing death of his 63-year-old mother-in-law in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
The violent incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and is being treated as a case of intimate partner violence by the Greater Sudbury Police.
According to a statement from the police, officers were called to a residence on Lorne Street shortly after 12:35 a.m. following reports of a violent domestic altercation. Upon arrival, they found a 32-year-old woman—believed to be Ogbeijielele’s wife—outside the home with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Inside the home, police discovered the lifeless body of a 63-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two young children were also found inside the residence but were not physically harmed. Authorities have since placed them in protective care.
Ogbeijielele was taken into custody at the scene. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and charges are expected to follow.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian-Canadian community and has once again brought attention to the issue of domestic and intimate partner violence.
